Why do people buy non 4WD SUVs?

So recently it snowed a lot here in Iowa, and of course the parking lot around my apartment was plowed with all the cars still in it. This creates mounds of snow behind all the spots, thus making it very difficult for people to get out. I don't have any problems because I a) know how to drive in the snow and b) have an explorer with 4WD. Even my roomie who has a Golf doesn't really have any problems. But my other roomate (who is from Texas btw) has got stuck three different times today getting into and out of parking spots. To be fair, it's not really his fault, it's his 2002 Explorer "Sport" that for some reason has no 4WD. Although I have to assume him being from Texas has something to do with it.

I really don't get the purpose of that kind of vehicle, and I sure as hell don't get why someone who lives in Iowa would get a car like that. It's big and heavy like all SUVs, and of course it was RWD so that means much less traction on slippery surfaces. And while it doesn't have 4WD it naturally has a massivly overpowered engine with enough torque to slip at the slightest touch to the gas pedal. Sure, it looks like an SUV, but it is 100% worthless for any SUV like things. When you get beat by a Golf you know your SUV is a pile of crap.

I know that when it comes to cars people do things for stupid reasons, but I can't really understand buying SUVs that are worthless for SUV activities. Sure, your vehicle looks cool (if SUVs are your thing), but you look like a moron when you get stuck three times in one day in your "SUV". It's like all those sporty looking cars that are slower than snail crap. Would someone like to shed some light on this mystery? Or at least make fun of my roomate? ;)

Edit: And just to answer the "I use mine for hauling stuff" response, a minivan is probably cheaper, can actually hold more, is easier to load and is probably front wheel drive.

So why buy an SUV? Besides, my roomate did need it, and he looked retarted without it. Some people seem to think just having an SUV will help.

Not as far as I know. Never saw anything that would suggest that on my insurance at least.

More of a myth than anything. It bumps up the price/value of the vehicle which thus increases the premiums.

ive noticed alot of them dont have a legitimate use for an SUV over a midsize car

my brother bought a used jeep for his first car recently, and kept going on about how it didnt have 4wd if he wanted to go on trails and in fields and whatever else he could come up with

me: hey james, where the fvck would you go to use 4wd? youre a musician who hates people and going outdoors
james: *blinks* good point

stupid kids....

Some people just don't need the "utility" of a 4WD, but like the interior volume. Plus you said it yourself, he's from Texas. :)

I have a 2WD Xterra, and I elected not to get a 4WD version simply because I knew I was going to use the vehicle as a daily driver (work-home) and wanted decent mpg. I've taken it rock climbing with some friends that have 4WD, and I was able to stick with them until we came to a tripple black-diamond trail (had a 50-degree incline with loose shale), and I slid all over the place. Also, I live in Los Angeles, there's absolutly no reason for 4WD here on a normal basis.

Status symbol? Penis too small? I don't know, I don't own a SUV. I was thinking about it before I bought my Accord but I realized A) Waste of gas and B) have no legitimate use for it. Go ask any soccer mom or SUV owner why they bought one - I'm going to guess because they like having the space for the family and the utility just in case they need it.

My crew cab pickup is only 2WD. Unless you do a lot of challenging off-roading in muddy conditions there's simply not as much need for 4WD here in the South. I'd love having it if I could just to know it was there, but I don't need it 99.9% of the time so I didn't feel it was worth paying extra for it.

Living in Iowa, and having to drive through some pretty nasty crap the last two days I can say that I certainly don't *NEED* a 4WD SUV, but it does make driving in poorly plowed roads and streets much less dramatic than in a FWD car.

Accellerating, turning, and plowing your way through intersections with 8" of snow in them is much easier with a 4WD vehicle.

My 4WD went out a couple of years ago :( I just put a few 50lb bags of kitty litter in the back. It was still great the other day during the snow storm when all the little cars were trapped in our parking lot and I had a high enough clearence to get through.

I'd much rather keep my pathfinder in 2wd mode (rear wheel drive) and have fun fishtailing around the turns. Rarely do I put it in 4WD for on road. It sucks down gas WAYYYYY to fast when I do that. But, there are quite a few places where NO car will go without 4WD (western NY btw... near the snow belt areas)

In Iowa, I agree, if you're going to buy an SUV, why not get 4X4. I imagine that most decline the 4WD option because of cost.

I grew up in the Dakotas & we owned a Jeep CJ, no sense not owning a 4WD.

However, here in Texas, guess how many Hummer H2's will actually even be driven on a gravel road?
