Why do people buy LCDs over CRTs?

Xernex

Senior member
Curious because I have been looking into getting a new monitor and just cant understand as to why LCDs seem so popular recently. Let me look at the pros and cons

LCD Pros
Takes a lot less space/lighter.

Cons
More expensive
Only good at its native resolution
Can get dead pixels
Low response times for games (ghosting etc)

Now CRT

Pros
Less expensive, for a larger screen.
No ghosting etc.
Supports multiple resolutions properly.
No problems like dead pixels.

Cons
Takes up more space/heavier.

Now this isn?ft a flame against LCD's but I would really like to know what the real advantage is of a LCD? I've heard they are meant to have more vibrant colors than CRTs, is this true? Even better than good quality CRTs? I can?ft really go anywhere to see good quality LCDs or CRTs cause most department stores sell the cheap types of each and most computer stores don?ft have them on display either.

Anyway I would like someone to please argue my views otherwise, because I would really like to know the real advantages, and weather I should get one or not.

Also does anyone know a good article anywhere comparing LCDs and CRTs?

Thanks

why do i use an LCD?

1. Easy on my eyes
2. easy on my eyes
3. desk space
4. oh easy on my eyes
5. desk space 🙂
6. LCD is lighter too

I am a heavy gamer and love my Planar... it has 16ms and i notice no ghosting whatsoever

BTW, even though i run games not on native resolutions, the games still look amazing surprisingly...

I used to be a Sony Trinitron G400 user, but I am never going back to CRT

I can only give you my reasons, which is what I guess you want. From reading current threads dealing with "LCDs vs CRTs", you'll see a lot of very subjective posturing on what is better. You'll probably get that here. I went from a Hitachi 19" SuperScan Supreme 752 to a Hitachi 17" CML174 ivory.
My reasons:
1. I got tired of that big old, heavy crt cranking out heat and taking up desk space.
2. It's not true that all LCDs suffer from ghosting in games.... this monitor has a refresh rate of 16ms. If there is ghosting, I can't detect it.
3. My native resolution, 1280 x 1024 (yes, I know that is not a "correct viewing resolution") is the same as the resolution I ran on my old crt so I don't care.
4. Games that don't run at 1280 x 1024 scale fairly nice anyway so it doesn't bother me - I have a 9700 pro so I can crank up the resolution on most of my games.
5. Colors are more virbrant than on my old crt. I feel I got a plus on color and clarity - things are less blurry than on my old crt.
6. I had a mid range crt monitor which was good enough for me. I consider this LCD to be a good mid range montior and they both ran about the same price new.
These are my reasons.
A lot of people need more flexible resolutions, so an LCD might not make them happy. Some people need more real estate on the desktop.... bigger LCDs are expensive and I don't know if there is one out yet with the 16ms refresh rate for games. Some people are bothered by the fact that if you look at an LCD at an angle, it fades. It's a subjective experience.... some people are going to argue in absolutes based on their own experience. My thought is, you just need to see for yourself.

i luv the space i saves over my old 19" crt and a 17" lcd is the same size as a 19" crt. moving it from place to place is a dream come true. after you get it paid for one sure tobe happy with it.

DVI text quality is gorgeous. In fact text quality without DVI is excellent too (with a good vid card and LCD).

My eyes prefer LCDs. I can't imagine having to ever work on a CRT based system for any extended amount of time, as it seems like pure torture after using LCDs for years.

I've got a 21" P1110. I also have a huge desk.

I think it's one of the best pictures available. you want it brighter? turn it up!
picture is ultra clear and has a high refresh rate.

I'd love to have a 21 LCD, but i dont want to have to sell my car to save a little desk space.

I think the LCD technoligy is really cool, all the hardware companies are pushing it since it's very pop. i'll wait until te prices are equivelent.

Do you need space? Are you strong enough to carry a 50 lb monitor? Would you rather pay less and get a bigger CRT?

those are the questions you have to ask yourself.

BTW the Intel developer forum announced new LCD's that take only 3 watts of power. (wont be available for a while)

LCD Pros

An LCD is a "real image", not a virtual image blasted onto the screen by an electron gun. => Easier on the eyes.

Less radiation.

No problems like dead pixels.

Actually, you'll find that Invar. shadow masks do have problems which shorten the life of the monitor. For example, there is a presario 5220 sitting a few feet away from me with a 4-year old monitor. It is blurry to the point where you can't read fine text and is dark-doesn't produce colours properly. In order to prevent this, you need a Aperture Grille which throws your cost arguement right out the window.

They also use A LOT less power and this is important in some parts of the US and Canada. It can save huge $$$.

They're easier on the eyes.

Ghosting is going the way of the dodo.

They're great for LAN parties and can be digital/digital rather than needing an analague source like CRTs.

I plan on buying an LCD in the near future. I'm tired of my monitor's sometimes high pitched whine and the geometric distortion and the size shape of the outline of the screen not being even and requiring adjustment from time to time.

wth is GHOSTING?

On lower end LCDs the pixels can't change fast enough so on very fast moving images like games you'll see someone move across the screen (for example) and you'll see ghost of where he just was.

for me :

1. the weight. My LCD weighs around 15 pounds compared to my 19 inch which weighs around 70 pounds. I hated carrying that CRT to a lan party....
2. less eye strain
3. the brightness and clarity of text/everything
4. size/desk space
5. No ghosting here. Running a Hitachi CML 174 which has a 16ms...... great LCD!
6. No dead pixels here so far. Though I bought a 3 year extended warranty from monitors direct so I am covered

I invested in a good video card so I play games at my native resolution (or as close to it as possible) which is 1280x1024. Ghosting is reduced it seems when I run it at the native res. I love my Samsung 191T.

Word 😎 No flicker at any refresh rate. I use my 17.4" Planar at the office and would like to get a second one and have a dual-monitor setup.

i own an lcd because it is easier on my eyes and on dvi, it is way sharper than any crt I've seen.
To me, the price was worth it. No matter what youre doing on your computer, it has to eventually go through your monitor. It's in use 100% of the time, and effects 100% of the things you do on your computer.

Im looking into perhaps buying myself 2x 17inch decent 16ms LCD's with 9700 pro for dual monitor.

Out of interest, does an LCD have 2 connectors, 1 for VGA cable and one for DVI? Or is it just DVI with an agp connector?

Thanks.

Dan

word

even though i am only making $5.25 an hour at Dominos.... it was well worth saving for a LCD!

Depends on the monitor. Mine has one of each (DVI and analog) and can actually be hooked up to two computers at once and toggled back and forth. But check your specs because sometimes the manufacturer only includes analog.

so youre saying that LCD IQ rivals a Syncmaster 753DF?

.20 dot pitch, very vibrant bright colors.
the dot pitch between a crt and lcd cant really be compared. if you understand what it really measures, you'll understand.
I actually upgraded from the 753df to a planar 17.4 on dvi. My father now uses the 753df
I was quite happy with the 753 when i had it, but now when i go to use the 753,i hate it!
You really have to see it to believe how sharp it is.

As the recent owner of a new Hitachi CML174 LCD all I can say is once you see an LCD you will NOT go back to CRT's again. There is NO comparision to CRT's. Once you crank the resolution up to 1280x1024 on the LCD EVERYTHING looks better. The colors are better on an LCD, I don't care which one you get. It takes up less space, I use a regular desk not a computer desk so more space is nice for me. As far as the price goes, I don't plan on buying another monitor for at LEAST 6 years or more. I spent $525.01 for this monitor and it was a GREAT investment. A Monitor is something you don't have to buy often, if you get a good one to start with. As far as ghosting, I see NO ghosting or blurring on my LCD. As long as you get one with at least 16ms response time you will do fine. Like I said I have a Hitachi CML174 and I'm VERY pleased with it.

One more thing, go to your nearest computer store and look at the LCD's they have and compare the picture to a CRT they have. Once you see it, you'll be amazed.

I replaced to 19-inch flat screen Hitachi 721s with a pair of Viewsonic VX900s. The biggest reason was H-E-A-T!

I now have a cooler computer room. 🙂

If you need accurate color, CRTs are still the way to go. If you dont, LCDs beat out CRTs in every catergory, except price.

Why do people buy LCDs over CRTs?

Because we can 🙂 😉

Seriously though, the others have touched upon it, and the only major negatives I found were native/max resolution and some slight ghosting in older/darker games. All the pros far outweigh the cons though, and my Sony G420 is now serving as a heat furnace on my mp3 server.

I guess the other negative is it forced me to go out and buy a 9700pro so I could run at 1280x1024x32 with maxed out resolutions, but it looks sooo much better than 1280x1024x32 on my G420 b/c of its true 19'' viewable image. Completely flat, no glare, no warping, no contrast, flickering or brightness issues. Love it. I just can't wait for the next generations so I can go dual panels and eliminate the only 2 flaws I see in LCDs (slight ghosting and fixed native).
