And dress them up like police cars when they aren't policemen?

I was going about 5 mph over the speed limit when I see a white Crown Vic with a spotlight near the mirror merge in behind me. Taking the cautious route, I slow down a bit and he passes me when I notice it's just some guy and definitely not a policeman.

Do these people get a kick out of scaring the crap out of people?

It can be quite a power trip to make people think you're a cop. But if you aren't doing anything wrong, don't worry.

You do realise that police cars are not crushed when they are replaced? You can get a great deal on a car if you are willing to buy an ex-police vehicle. I'm pretty sure that what you saw was a car that had been retired and sold at auction.

I'm not so sure about the one today. It looked relatively new, no dents and chrome molding. Normally, I just keep an eye out for cops with a particular eye for Crown Vic types but since this one had a spotlight, I went to Orange level awareness. I'm finding it hard to distinguish cops around here now though because alot of them drive SUVs.

Sometimes you can buy a used cop car for a really sweet price. Sometimes you can buy a new one for a really good price even. I don't think many do it on purpose to play cops.

Some areas sell their cars based on milage, not age. So a 2 year old car with 150,000 mile might go and still look pretty good, esp. after a good cleaning/detailing. Spotlights are almost always left on, cages removed, and other special equipment removed.

I have a 1994 LX version and because I am young(er), not "grandpa", with a short haircut it seems a significant majority of daytime traffic will react. At time it can be pretty funny. Rice boy locking up his tires at 75 mph plus just before he passes me was a fun one. At other times it is a curse, "scared" drivers going 65 mph on the dot in the left lane and they won't pass anyone when I want to get to work and have managed to leave late.

They are very reliable cars and can run without any significant problems for 250,000 miles if well taken car of.

Most of the ex-police vehicles I have seen have been clean, and all I've seen so far have still had the spotlight installed. If it was the older body-style, then it was most likely a retired car. If it was the newer style, it's a little early for retirement, but not out of the question I guess.

1) Cheap, reliable car... spotlight usually comes with them
2) Fun scaring people like you ;)
3) Some people fix them up real good and take them to auto shows (which I am working on)

I have an '85 Ford LTD and I don't think it looks too much like a police car. Runs like a beauty though...never had any serious problems with it.

Oh, and I also have knight rider lights mounted on the grill

Usually when the cop cars get dented they get repaired. If the brakes go bad they get replaced etc. Usually when the get retired they get cleaned, detailed and painted if needed. The maintenance is done every 3000 miles and its usually far more extensive then the local lube n tune. If they are are in a pursuit its new tires, brakes and if needed rotors and drums. If the car is in an accident it has to be inspected by the California Highway Patrol (here in CA) before it can be returned to duty.

So is usually a good deal for someone. The agencies deadline the cars at about 98-100k miles.

I kno the 99s and up have pretty decent performance (290 hp) and handle very well.

I have a 1987 Crown vic and it is a great car. Mine is just a civilian car but it is the base model and still says LTD on it.

It is dark blue and has little chrome. It looks like the unmarked or detectives cars we used to have here.

It is fun going to the police station because all the officers in the parking lot just stare at it. Then when I step out they look disappointed. LOL.

I have to replace my rear springs with something stronger and MOOG has what I need. Good suspension parts are not easy to find for this car.

Some people happen to prefer a bigger car with lots of room and RWD with V8.

I always thought it would be kind of fun to drive one of those cars, but not because of other people's reactions. I would just want to drive it because it's a powerful RWD boat and you could drive it like those bad-ass 70's TV cops. I'd have no emotional attachment to it, so I could drive off curbs or speed over speed bumps and not care if it got all banged up. I might even bang it up on purpose, just as punishment for being such a boat. Bwahaha! Bad car! Who's your daddy?! ::floors it over the crest of a san francisco hill, catches air::
