Why do people buy brand name drugs when no-name are next to them?

In a few cases, like the Advil clearcaps, I can understand it. But, why does a crack baby-turned adult spend $6 on a bottle of tylenol instead of $4 on the no-name? You do realize that they are legally mandated to be the same thing, right?

😕

Since I use about 1 advil a month the price difference wouldn't matter to me, but I would probably be suckered into thinking the quality control is higher on the name brand since it has a company standing behind it.

I know on store brand food the quality is often one step lower than the name brand version, even though the store brand is sometimes manufactured by the same company.

Well, while legally mandated to be the same thing, most generic brands are not the same quality as the name brand. They have to meet FDA tolerances for that drug, but Generic stuff IS typically different. Albeit this is anecdotal, but numerous people other than I have noticed that generic Benzodiazepines are weaker than the name brand. I'm not the only one that noticed that the strength of Roche Valium was more than the generic diazepam produced by other companies. When it comes to tylenol some is marketing, and some is due to the fact that I think Tylenol has higher standards and probably better efficacy.

I don't know about drugs, but I do notice that typically, store brand merchandise may look like a brand-name, may contain the same ingredients, but will not perform the same. This usually occurs with shampoo and conditioner, foods, sauces, etc.

Generics are similar, but not identical, to the brand names. For some purposes the brand name may be better.

My massively-allergic son has problems with a lot of the fillers/stabilizers/whatever that they put in drugs. With the brand names, we can find out exactly what's in there. Worth the few extra bucks to keep the kid away from the emergency room.

For most uses, though, yeah - marketing. You don't have warm fuzzy commercials with generics.

Oh, and the other one: brand names go on sale more often, and have better coupons, so they are often cheaper than generics. What I love is to see people buy the generics when right next to them are the brand names on sale cheaper 😀 .

Name brands usually taste better.

And in a few cases, they actually work better. Generic ibuprofen usually take about twice as long to work than their Advil equivalent.

😛 Is that like the person who could pay $.79 for something but instead gets "4 for $3.19"? I've seen that before.

I hate that damn x for y crap. Why do I need a calculator to figure out how much something cost.
