Why buy a $300, $400 or $500 card and benchmark day and night rather then play games ???

Whats the point in seeing who can get the highest score ?...lol

I can understand as using benchmarking as tool to tune your system, but some people go way to far just to try to score 100,000 3D Marks...lol

Damit people...go play some game :)

E-PENIS, that's right, whoever has the most money.

It would probably be a better competition if it was how much performance can be squeezed out of this much money, but that's never a factor.

It's a hobby, just like overclocking, lots of people find it addictive, me included. Nothing's wrong with that, I play much much much more games then benchmarking, but benchmarking can be really fun, especially since u did pay 400 bux for the card.

No seriously though, using 3DmarkXX is good if your testing your own vid card and system. Make some tweaks, test again. Its not a very good indicator of how games will play from one PC to another. E.G. AMD Athlon 64 3400 with 6800Ultra against a P4 3.4 GHz with X800XTPE. No good.

My usage of 3DMark03 here:

3DMark03/ 6800 12x1,5vp 325/700: Score 8683

3DMark03/6800 16x1,5vp @ 325/700: Score = 9362

3DMark03/6800 16x1,6vp @ 325/700: Score = 9488

3DMark03/6800 16x1,6vp @ 350/800: Score = 10208

I used it to test my card and sytem. Only. Not against other systems. This was a good indicator that I was getting improvements with my tweaking. I have not tested Doom3 yet with this method, but will eventually. YMMV.

Well, if I just bought a new piece of hardware, I don't think it's unreasonable that I want to know how much performance benefit the new part gave me.

Anyways, since my current video card costs maybe $30 new, I'm not epenising anything. :p

I wasnt trying to down benching...I was just making sure all you people out there play some games with all those $300+ video cards:p

Its just like buying a Dodge Viper and doing nothing with it but dyno pulls...wheres the fun it that ?

What bothers me even more are people who spend $400-500 on their video card, and they use a $100 17" CRT that can barely do 1280x1024 :disgust:
It's not going to look better than your previous $200 card with your shtty monitor!

What if I have a $30 video card connected to a $60 monitor? :(

Hah, that almost sounds like me.
I've got a $150 card running on a monitor that I probably could only get rid of by giving it away for free...a six year old 17" HP pavillion.
Although, I'm sure a lot of people in my sort of boat don't upgrade to a $400 card to make their game look better...they just want the framerates.
I'm too poor to get a new monitor :p

Benchmarking is a good indication primarily when something is wrong, and a low 3dmark score (or what have you) is often a good way to make sure everything is running properly, etc.

yes but then you are stuck with noobs screaming their 3dmark score is 200 points lower than their friends ;)

I totally agree, I don't get the thing with these blasted 3dmark scores. I get like 10800 or so 3dmark03 points which does not compare to some people with my setup, of course I use the 65.73 drivers, which are not tuned for 3dmark, but own games :)

For me it's because most games coming out suck (Doom3, anyone?). The benchmarks are actually more fun then the lousy games coming out!:(

I benchmark actual games because then I know exactly how my system is performing now and where I need to upgrade.
