Why do people at some businesses answer the phone with 'Hello'?

I never answer my phone with the company name. They either got my number from my business card (has the company name on it) or were transferred from the front desk receptionist.

I have caller ID and can see the number on the phone as soon as it rings. Oh, and I'd be surprised if I get 3 phone calls a day from the outside.

Yea, same here. I have caller ID but I answer the phone with a "It's David." And I'll only get maybe 1 outside call a day. The usual outside calls I get is my girlfriend who calls me 20x a day and maybe a buddy of mine to see what im doing later.

our marketing department decided that we should now say "welcome to ___, where you can count on more, this is _____ how may i help you?" who the hell says their slogan when they answer the phone?! now i i just say "welcome to ___ this is ____." no complaints so far.
