Why do people argue about things they know nothing about?

So in another forum dominated by teenagers the topic of 64-bit cpus came up. One guy said

I have a iMac Core2Duo 2.8GHz. The two cores are bound together to form a 64 bit.

Well, this made my skin crawl so I responded saying that basically 2 cores does not mean a 64 bit processor and it has nothing to do with it. Gave the example of my quad core not being a 128 bit processor and my Athlon 64 being a 64 bit processor. His response was

I know what I'm talking about. The cores are linked to make it a 64bit computer.

Don't believe me? I can run 64bit apps, and 64bit OS's.

My goodness, needless to say my response was something like "You don't have a clue here several links to prove it" and gave a few wikipedia articles to back it up, making it very clear that I wasn't disputing his computer being 64 bit but that his logic behind why it was 64 bit was completely wrong.

This is not an uncommon occurrence. More then once I see people trying to act authoritative on things they have no clue about (making themselves look bad) and it seems the only way to stop them is with a smack down of epic proportions.

Do you have any stories like this?

People may have no clue, but they certainly have opinions. Sadly, these people often vote.

This is what I fear, they will defend so blindly that which they have no clue about. Even in the face of someone that does. It's like having someone argue that there are really only 50 cm in a meter.

and wasn't it nice of Anand to create a place for them to all get together?

That kid must know computers only though consoles. Those were the bastards that created the 2x16 bit cpu = 1 32bit cpu crap.

Don't go around spouting truth or, we'll have to burn you at the stake for being a heretic. :)

Some gems from a recent thread in OS

At the same MHZ, newer CPUs will crunch 64bit instructions bester than older CPUs running at the same MHZ.

I totally turn off virtual memory for my PC because I have enough to do so.

All I'm saying is a system can run and optimized to run 64bit apps, which the size of the code is doubled, will be faster than 32bit.

2nd, 32 vs 64 does matter, for hardware and software. It is not as evident yet. It took awhile for 16bit apps and hardware to became obsolete.

My first computer still had one 16bit slot, 4 PCI 32bit, and AGP.

My virtual memory is 0MB and my machine runs faster than ever. My 6GB ram is not virtual, it is real.

I get a headache reading on forums like that.

There's quite a number of ones i used to post on where similar misinformation is rampant...but after a while you just give up & let them implode on their own ignorance.

P&N here is a lot like this.

Wiki and google give people enough knowledge in their minds to debate at graduate levels.

It's nutty...the worst thing about this crap is the masses will usually jump in thinking the idiot is right.

Aside from the shitastic English, there's some truth to some of those. The C2D CPUs have a better IPC than the Netburst architecture. It will be a long time before 32 bit apps are obsolete. And my 8KTA3 Socket A Athlon board did still have a 16 bit ISA slot. And 64 bit code is larger, but potentially faster than 32 bit. Just not necessarily double.

Just be glad people aren't selling 2 400MHz CPUs as an 800MHz system anymore. Otherwise there'd be a ton of 10GHz PCs on the market.

Typically the answer is one of 3 things:

1. Everyone has got an opinion.
2. People have been misinformed.
3. People fill in the holes of the puzzle with something that logically makes sense to them even though it might be grossly incorrect.

The bonus answer:

4. Internet.

Because we are bred to regurgitate information instead of using reasoning to actually make a point. Take a look at high school debate teams if you don't believe me. The entire method behind a high school debate is to carry around 10 bins of papers with articles from random untrustworthy people and then speak as quickly as humanly possible citing those people. Whoever can "prove" that their opponent's argument leads to the destruction of the universe usually wins.
