Why do people (Americans) like guns so much?

I do not get it. Can someone tell me why people are so crazy about pre (and now Post) ban weapons?
I am seriously interested in why, so if you could please explain your answer.

Is it for personal security? If so, what are you so worried about that you need an assault weapon to protect your self (or home)? Explain

Hunting? Ok I can almost see this one except don't they make rifles that you can hunt with that are and always have been legal? Explain

Because they are or were illegal? Explain

Because you saw them in a movie once and it looked really cool? Explain

How about adding these options:

Because they are fun to shoot
Because they are collectable items
Because they make you feel powerful (this is actually bad)

Because the right to self defense = freedom.

Because guns give the people the same power as the government.

Because no population can truly be free if it is unarmed and defenseless.

My reasonable guess is that it's because of the root culture America was founded on; rebellion against Britain and a wariness of the tyranny of government ever since.

History....

I want to get some older pieces and they do look cool.

another reason would be that I heard target shooting is fun. I don't hunt, so that's not a reason for me.

I like historical weapons and admittedly weapons that look "cool." Mainly though, I am interested in WWII era weaponry like the German MG-42, etc. or old West guns like the repeating rifle. Too bad I can't afford the real deals or even the reproductions!

corrected.

Power should flow from the people to the government. Right now we are dangerously close to or maybe have crossed the line where power flows from the government to the people. That's a scary place to be.

Yeah right, like I am going to stand up against an M1 Tank with my 45. The days of being able to overthrow our government with the weapons we are allowed to own are long gone.

That said, they still should be legal because they are a blast and in the hands of a responsible individual they are not dangerous. Well they are dangerous to a criminal breaking into the home of a gun owner.

For me:

I like to shoot.
I like to collect historical firearms.
Things that make a big bang are cool.
Self-defense.
A hedge against opressive government.

Haha..I was timing how long before you popped in here, K1052! 😉

Why do people like to collect stamps?
Why do people mod cars?
Why do people like to garden?

Because they just like it.

Here's a few:
1: Collectors. People like to collect things whether they're just cool looking, historical, or they bring back memories.
2: Protect the other 26 amendments. Lets face it, the threat of an armed revolt does pop into minds when coming up with ideas for things like the Super Patriot Act.
2b: Excersize your rights. Sometime's it's important to remember what rights you have, and why you have them.
3: Shooting is fun. Same reason people play darts. It's not easy to shoot tight patterns so it's a good challenge.
4: Power. Not power over an individual, but power as in the same reason people like big beefy engines. They like the feel of controlling a force that is mind boggling. Lets face it, ever see a little kid watch a bull dozer with awe? That feeling just doesn't grow old until you do it alot.

Coward? I have no profile so I am a coward? What do I need one to ask a simple question?

We just want to know where you're from...

It helps us whack jobs formulate a response.

Kalifornia residents get a different response than UK residents😉

Ok, I get the 2nd amendment thing but do you feel you have the same power as the government b/c you have (for example) an AK? I mean if you want real power you need fighter jets and nuclear bombs. Or at the very least a stinger to shoot down the fighter jet, but I do not seem them on the market. I am surprised you don?t want a stinger; I mean it is a weapon that would give you "power".

It seems everyone in the Middle East has guns, but are they free?

I agree. i don't have any guns, but I can see it as like any hobby, like computers, where its fun to have stuff just because it is cool.

I'd like to have on of those Winchesters from the old west that had the brass side plates, or whatever that part is called, as an example.

I hate lots of people. Having a gun would give me the option to shoot them and get them out of my life.

(However, I don't actually own a gun; see previous sentence for explanation why.)
