Why do people act like this?

I've always enjoyed playing games online. I think it's kind of wonderous how people from across the country, or even across the world for that matter, can come together in one "cyber arena" and compete. Even though you don't have a name or a face to go by, after an hour or two of deathmatch, it's almost like you've made a new friend. The things that people say in the few seconds between matches can tell you a lot about him/her, and most of the people I've played with have always been a lot of fun.

However, tonight while playing Unreal Tournament something happened that bothered me. I was playing in a deathmatch of about ten people, and the game was pretty intense. Miraculously I won the match, and I was shown on the screen as the winner, as all UT players know. Well, just because I was in a position that appeared as if I was "camping" another player immediately started calling me names and cussing at me. I was surprised to say the least because I certainly wasn't "camping", and I felt I had won the match fair and square. I, like any other deathmatch player, like to be in the middle of the action.....not camp and wait.

This is actually the first time something like this has happened to me, and I must admit I was pretty offended.....enough to leave the server. Why do people act like this? Isn't computer gaming supposed to be fun? I would never act like this guy. If I win, GREAT! And if I don't then it's no big deal. I mean come on.....it's only a game.

Thanks for listening to my rant,

You don't know who you are playing with. The kid could be 10 years old for all you know..Don't take it to seriously and your feeling won't be hurt.

I get accused of cheating in Counter-Strike every once in a while. People suck so they lash out at the good players who always beat them down :)

Heh, I have seen it all while playing online..
people throwing out hideous profanities, racial slurs and what not..
It is kinda sad! But I guess you just have to deal with it! I just turn off all messages when I play TFC or CS on pubs, so I don't have to listen to their sh!t!

No offense taken. In a way, I did feel a little bullied because like I said this is the first time that something like this has happened to me. I'm sure it won't bother me the next time I kick his @ss. :)

I say play some Counter-Strike. There's enough cheating going on in CS that almost 24/7 on every server you'll see somebody talking about it. Cheating is very prevelant, but talking about it is much more common. I was accused of cheating once today, and was once yesterday too. Just because you're good at something and others aren't that gets them mad, so they like to think that isn't possible, and give a reason why. It just so happens cheating is the #1 excuse. Maybe these are some reasons why people think I cheat ..

Me taking out 4 guys at once in the sewers of cs_militia .. (upper right corner)
Final score - de_dust
Another de_dust

If you do good at anything people are going to think that you don't deserve it.

Stop by your local computer store (Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry's, etc) and buy it. It's about $15 - $20 US and it's much easier to buy the CD than to buy Half-Life, download all of the patches, and then download the Counterstrike modification onto that, which is about 83MB. If you already have Half-Life, download the latest patches and the Counterstrike mod from a site such as FilePlanet.

Ok thanks. What is it though? I thought I read a while ago it was like a R6 mod. I love R6 and play it all the time.

What's it called? It's just "Counterstrike". It should have a police swat guy on the front of the box and should be located by the rest of the first-person shooters.

If you want more information check out Counterstrike.net.

I haven't played Rainbow 6 but from the pictures I've seen they're very similiar. Let me give you my summary of what CS is:

Counterstrike is a first person shooter unlike many others out there. Personally I like it because the realism and intense action really make the game come alive. You start off as either a Counter Terrorist (CT) or Terrorist (T). When you first spawn into the level, you get $800. From there, you buy weapons, armor, etc. Certain items cost more than others - relative to their power and accuracy. Sniper rifles, pistols, hand grenades (smoke, flash bangs, etc) are all provided in your effort.

There are different types of operations you are placed into, and depending on whether you are a CT or T your mission will vary. First, there are "cs" style maps. These involve rescuing hostages (usually 4) on a certian point of the map, and guiding them to a certain point. The Terrorists spawn with the hostages and try to protect them from the CT's who are going to attempt to rescue them. Other types of maps, that are less popular but widely used, are "as" which are assasinations. There is a V.I.P. among the Counter Terrorists which has a different skin, only a USP style pistol and 200 armor (100 more than a normal player). The V.I.P. trys to get to a certain area of the map without getting killed by the Terrorists. "de" maps include the Terrorists planting the bomb at certian locations (usually 2 - 3 bomb sites) and the Counter Terrorists trying to defuse this bomb. Bombs have a time limit and can be defused by the CT's if they get to the bomb in time. Defusal kits can be bought, to speed up the process of defusing the bomb. If a CT doesn't get to the bomb in time, I think you can guess what happens :) Any player within a certain radius of a bomb will either get highly hurt or die on impact.

Once you die on any style map, you die. You have to wait until the entire round is done before you respawn and play again. The emphasis is not to die, and to kill as many players of the other side. Teamwork is key. I use the same configuration of Quake 3 and Half-Life. "Team-Say" commands are built in and you can assign certain keys to perform different commands followed by numbers.

Hope that helps. :D

Sweet I will have to pick it up and try it. How many people are usually in these games and where are the servers to join at? THanks for the answers to my questions!
