what benefit could this possibly have?

Naming your child after someone in the bible does not make them christian, it does not help them find favor with God. It does not make them live longer or richer.
It might seem logical for more Catholics to do this because they revere the mary + saints, even enough to pray to them, instead of God. But I especially dont get it because even non-religious people do this.

People don't have much to hope for. If by chance, someone births the next Messiah, they may not want him to be called Ralphie.

It's a religious thing. If you aren't, you wouldn't understand. It's really no different than naming them after a relative. It's a respect thing.

Or a complete lack of originality.

:)

Seriously. It's just a personal choice. It may even be a family tradition. You never know.

Plus, how does this affect you in your daily life? Oh, that's right....it doesn't. So get over it.

Seriously. Is it offensive to you? Why do you hate Christianity so much that you can't even tolerate people naming their kids after people in the Bible?

anti-relgionists want all aspects of religion removed from society, that means removing all names/words that are in the bible from the public view. so they want all people with biblical names to change them. it is part of the secular conspiracy

so just because Jonathan is used in the Bible, that means it's off limits?

FoBoT you changed your face?!

People have named each other "after names from the bible" so many times now that very very few people actual recognize their names as being from the bible.

I don't see myself as MATTHEW FROM THE BIBLE RAWRRR! I'm Matt, husband, gamerand pc admin.

How many people have you met lately named Lazarus, Zaccheus, Judas, Bartholomew, etc?

We did it because mrsskoorb liked the name, and I agreed to it because it showed that it was not a contemporary made up stupid freaking name like Austin, which I nominate as the sh*tiest name ever. Or Christal/Crystal, Jasmine, etc.

Errr....how is Austin a contemporary made up name? Granted it is generally recognized as a surname but it isn't made up. Of course, I'd be worried if someone chose that name because of Austin Powers. :D

I had a great-uncle named Eucharist. He was like #16 out of 18 or so, and I think they were running out of options.

I was watching one of those design shows with my wife, and there was this rabbi and his wife on there with their son Mordecai. I truly felt sorry for him. Hopefully he had a better middle name.

There are so many normal "biblical" names (Sarah, Leah, Joseph, David etc.) I don't know why people go with the whacked-out ones.

I don't care when it was made up, but it just reeks of trailer trash. It's so freaking sleezy and common. Anybody with the name austin has no choice but to be a southern hick with not a semblance of class or education. It's preordained and an integral part of the name. It's just unforgivable.

Mine name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against the enemy and his followers.
"who is like God" as they say.

Just because someone has a name that was in the Bible doesn't necessarily mean they were named that way just because its a Biblical name. There are tons of names in the Bible.
