why do opposites attract?

opposites attract to fill a void. They tend to find others to fill in their missing spots to become whole. The universe works this way too.

i see it over and over. you'd think similarities would be a stronger attraction.

Well, you see I man has a Penis and a woman has a Vagina and when..... ah... either you get it or you don't.

LOL! OMG I laughed when I saw that one...

What determines opposites?

If a man who is 5'2" and a woman who is 6'4" get together, you'd think that they are opposites. He might be from Minnesota and she from Texas, and we'd all call them opposites. But they might have similiar interests, jobs, hobbies and personalities. So for the few things that they have that are opposite, they have many things that are similiar.

Or what about the picture perfect couple that appears to have everything in common: looks, families, goals, careers, yet they differ drastically in personality. So similiar, yet so opposite.

I think that for every couple, there are similiarities and differences. I have never seen two people exactly alike.

'Cause they try to "fix" each other?

maybe not fix each other, but each want to 'fix' him/her self, by finding someone with strengths that he/she does not have.

And because of this, sometimes "opposites" work in complete synergy. 🙂

i think of it as complimenting each other... one may be a "techy" the other an artsy fartsy person. They just mesh well. I always said i would never want to be with/date someone that was too similar too me. It would be like dating myself. I want to experience and learn new and different things. That comes with someone opposite from me!

Yeah, my fiancee compliment each others personalities. We're a great team! Sometimes I'm a little too laid back and sometimes she is a little to uptight (don't get any ideas) so in most situations we balance each other out.

I tell her to calm down and she tells me to care a little more.

We can take a small step back from this to help analyze it.

Why is it that we get along less well with friends that are so much like us?

Even though we may care about the person, even though we may be willing to take a bullet for the person, we just can not stand being with them for more than a couple of hours?

I think yellowfiero comes closest.

If we are not with an "opposite," be it in friendship or romance, then we see way too much of our own faults reflected back on us.

But that is just my 2 cents of armchair psycology.

Back to your regularly scheduled discusion.

Statistics have shown that in most successful relationships both parties share the same values, goals and personality. Also, people tend to date people who even LOOK like them. Opposites may attract sometimes, but it usually ends up in divorce because they just don't have the same viewpoint.

So I disagree with your view.
