expensive to develop and maintain. Britain already had a railroad system. Cheaper to maintain that than built a brand new one.

for a while they were talking about building a bullet train from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, but i think it would be too hard to protect from terrorism-- all those miles of track in the middle of nowhere.

There's one here in Norfolk too but it doesn't work

They started building the Maglev at Old Dominion either my freshman or sophomore year there. I completed my Masters two years ago and the maglev still does not work! (there are issues with its funding, its contract, and the overall design)

MagLev /= Monorail

Japan has one MagLev that was built for the Aichi Expo of 2005 in Nagoya, which is about 5 miles of track.
Shanghai has a real one that actually goes at high speeds but is only a short distance as well.

I have seen both in person and rode the one in Aichi. It was quiet and smooth, but the train was not running at a speed of more than 40-50 mph (by choice).

This ones better: Looooong live our soviet motherland! Built by our peoples mighty hands! Long live our people united and freeeee! Long live their superioriteeee!

Anyways, i think it would be good to have levitating trains, dont know exactly what resources they use but they sound like they would save fuel etc and be more efficient at a higher speed.

If I'm not mistaken, UK did have one of the first commercial maglev trains at one of their airports. It just wasn't a high speed type.

Japan still does not have a commercial high speed maglev route, what they do have is a test track in Yamanashi. They have a maglev monorail in Nagoya though (only gets up to 60mph or so), and a couple of subway lines throughout Japan use magnets for propolsion (they can make the tunnels smaller).

The only high speed maglev is in China.

That is an UGLY train. If you're building a freaking expensive maglev system, wouldn't youw ant to use a nice looking car?

It looks just like the Japanese one.

'sup fellow Monarch! (Class of '92 and '03 :D)

I was just at ODU a couple of weeks ago - playing on the tennis courts right behind the Maglev. What a waste! It's just parked in front of the Field House, just rusting away with the tracks. Nuts and bolts everywhere. I wonder how many buildings they could have built or re-furbished with the $$$ wasted on that boon-doogle!

I was gonna say that they have one for the same reason they can build an island to build an airport on.... because they can, and will, spend the money to make it happen.

How about the Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid they are thinking of building. I saw an episode of Extreme Engineering about it.... it's huge.

Class of '03 and '04 here.

Actually none of the money spent was funded by the school, so all they did was disrupt student life by building that thing (really screwed up my bike route from Powhattan/Whitehurst to the classrooms, pissed me off just seeing it sit there and waste away).

Lets hope the planning for starting a football team goes better than this project did!
