Why do Ohio State fans chant the chorus of Seven Nation Army?

I don't get the connection. Before kickoffs the OSU fans all chant the main guitar riff to Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes?

Its a Detroit band, the song makes no reference to Ohio as far as I can tell. What gives?

for real? Dude that just boosted Ohio state so much in my mind. I mean it makes sense though. It basically says we'll tear you apart.

why do they play tequila at so many games in the '80's
why do so many play the notre dame fight song
why did they play who let the dogs out at games in the '90's

maybe it is just a fad

Yeah, but its not like its a new song. The song was released in 2003, and they just started chanting it at the games last year I think.

American Collegite Sports
Seven Nation Army has become popular as a fan pump up song in American Football and Basketball contests as well, particularly in the Big Ten. Penn State Nittany Lions spectators, the first to adopt the song stateside, first chant the riff in the chorus, then the band joins in after a couple verses. Starting with the 2008 season, this song is played at Ohio State football games before kickoffs. The Ohio State student section in the South bleacherssings along with the guitar riffs and jumps in unison to the beat, as do many of the players. The song is also popularly used at the University of Michigan and Purdue University home games, and is also used for basketball by the St. John's Red Storm.
some songs just work well at sporting events

It took me a while to figure out why Texas Tech fans all have pirate flags.

The real question is how that abortion of a rap remix version of Seven Nation Army ever got popular and made it on the air.

"I'm gonna laugh at yall..."

For the same reason "we will rock you" was sung by friggin everybody.

Though it does seem they do "hang on sloopy" less, which is a Ohio State specific song.

For the same reason why other songs such as Zombie Nation's "Kernkraft 400 (Sport Chant Remix)" and Queen's "We Will Rock You" are played at any number of sporting events. They're songs great for crowds to join on and get pumped up to.

That song was played in the Euro 08 soccer tournament before each match last year.
It`s big in all world sporting events.

hang on sloopy is a 3rd quarter tradition. :)

today's game was crazy exciting. Had a lot of energy since it was such a close game.
Was down at the endzone multiple times. Doing pushups. :)

Had to wait forever for the bastards to clear the stadium though since they charged the field. I would have too, but we couldn't. :) And we had no room and no way to control the crowd so we could get the flag down.
