Why do new cartoons suck so much?

Am i the only one here that thinks new cartoons suck? I mean come on, Ed, Edd, and Eddie, Powerpuff Girls, Hey Arnold!, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory are educating our kids today, while back in the days we had creative cartoons like Transformers, Gonad the Barbarian, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Spiderman, even Aladdin was a decent cartoon.

Even Disney movies nowadays suck compared with the old ones (how many of you watched Treasure Planet..)

I seriously think new cartoons are dumbing down the kids of today. The animation sucks, the jokes aren't even that funny, and the setting is all in some boring old town - never cool like the world of TMNT or Transformers.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

i gotta agree...perspective is everything. Not to mention you're view is tainted by your nostalgia...remember everyone always says "back in the good ol' days".

As a long time transformers fan, I have to admit it's for nostalgia only that I can stand to watch it. The animation in transformers sucks and the stories are thrown together at best. I don't see how it's any better than todays cartoons.

Although I must admit, Batman Beyond was pretty cool

All my friends thought I was nuts for watching SpongeBob SquarePants...

I got SpongeBob SquarePants DVD for birthday present, and I'd been sucked in ever since. Great stuffs.

I agree 100%.

I find SB SP to be quite disturbing.

Bah.. even what you guys consider to be the cartoons of the good ol' days of yesteryear can't hold a candle to the classic Bugs Bunny / Road Runner from Warner Brothers, and Tom & Jerry from MGM. Chuck Jones was the undisputed master at cartoon animation and storytelling.

Have you seen Johnny Bravo or Powerpuff Girls? They're so lazy on animation there - a 10 second scene could be just an upclose of Dexter's eye, and his eye would move, with some odd violin sound in the background, then a *blink blink* accompanied by a piano.

eh, they just look bad, to put it in a nutshell

Yes, I agree.

I agree with that too... I miss the old Mickey Mouse's with the old Pluto and old Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and all the rest.

(not black and white mickey mouse, just 1970's MM)

I don't think it's just that, I don't think cartoons nowadays are creative enough to make kids think. Gone are the complex intricate worlds of Transformers, TMNT, and X-Men, with dozens of villains/heroes and many worlds. Nowadays cartoons are like sitcoms. Powerpuff Girls (an "action" cartoon) has maybe 2 dozen characters overall, and it's all held in the City of Townsville. No cool Silver Surfer vs. Thanos epics or anything like that. Hey Arnold! is a classic example of this; it's like a dumbed down version of Doug.

I really detest today's cartoons as well. Part of it is probably the age thing, but there are still a few good ones... Like good old Sponge Bob :) Also, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim is really good, with Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, the Brak Show, etc... Of course, those shows are more geared for "big kids" like me and not "real kids" like PowerPuff girls or something.

You're probably overestimating your love of your childhood favorites. There were lots of shows I loved as a kid which don't hold up well now (Transformers and G.I. Joe among them). At least there are some modern shows which were not immediately intended as merchandising vehicles (although popularity has now gotten them to that point).

I think you're also underestimating (some of) the current crop of shows. Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, and the Powerpuff Girls can be hit and miss, but they can also be pretty sophisticated satire, much in the vein of classic Looney Tunes cartoons. You also failed to note some of the most visible current entries in the genre: Futurama, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons.

Even Disney movies nowadays suck compared with the old ones (how many of you watched Treasure Planet..)

Treasure Planet was not a particularly bad film, but it was a lackluster one, and that's viewed as a cardinal sin when you've got a resume of beloved films like The Little Mermaid or The Lion King. But Lilo and Stitch was some of the best character-driven storytelling the studio has ever put out (almost at the level of the severely underrated Warner Bros. The Iron Giant). And I loved the visuals in both Treasure Planet and Atlantis, even though I found their storylines less than stellar.

I seriously think new cartoons are dumbing down the kids of today. The animation sucks, the jokes aren't even that funny, and the setting is all in some boring old town - never cool like the world of TMNT or Transformers.

I can't remember when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wasn't just in the city.

As for animation, don't confuse minimal style with poor animation. Samurai Jack is one of the simplest-looking cartoons on television, and easily one of the most well-animated.

I can't stand Ed, Edd and Eddie but my 8 year old son loves that show. I can't figure out the humor in that show especially that kid with a plank with the face drawn on it.
