Why do nerdy kids hate rap so much?

Now this isn't about whether or not rap is a supreme artform (rap, like any other genre, has some crap-50 cent- and some brilliant stuff- mos def, deltron3030)... Just lets verbalize why you guys hate rap/hip hop so much... I used to hate it too ("it's not music! it's some guy talking over records!) until I realized that some of the writing was basically well written modern poetry and that some of the production/ music was actually pretty intricate and creative.. Now, why hate rap? I understand not liking a genre since I do not like country music but the hatred is what i'm curious about..

What's the difference between "Not Liking" and "Hating"??

I use them interchangeably.

Oh, and thanks for calling us all nerds...... *bird*

i agree. it's one thing to dislike a genre of music, but it's another thing to berate rap like some people do. on a different note, i hear alot of people talk about "brilliant" stuff from mos def. in your opinion, what is his best album?

Oh come on, we're all nerds... Face it.. As far as the difference between not liking and hating - there's a huge difference... Hatred includes angrily speaking out about something and getting emotional (some raps threads have a lot of this).. Not liking is just not appreciating something but not having a personal stance (or at least a passionate stance)

Hey I was using Mos Def as a somewhat popular example.. I don't adore him and only really like Black Star.. Rap that I really like right now comes from Anticon.. Ironically, a crew of nerdy white guys... Atmosphere, CloudDead, Restiform Bodies, Buck 65- great stuff by non-thugs..

it's basically just speaking over a repetitive beat. it lacks all harmony and is used as a vehicle for 'thugs' who came 'straight outta compton' to 'bounce' with their 'bling' and their 'bitches' to.

Funny story - i was at a trendy improv club the other night and was watching some great comedy.. Tina Fey and Horatio Sans from SNL were there and this harvard educated comedian started going on a rant about NWA.. The entire audience - mostly upper class, ivy league educated people, started reciting Ice Cube lyrics in unison... Very odd night.. Alec Baldwin was there too!

what a great generalization there genius. i know lots of people that aren't "nerds" that don't like rap for the simple fact that it's not good music. and i know lots of "nerds" that do enjoy rap. the only thing rap is good for is getting girls on the dance floor.

that is what it is for me. I'm not into rap, I don't hate rap, I just don't care.

edit: and yes, i realize he was refering to all the 50 cents and blah blah, and blah blah blah

But you do understand that gangster rap is only a sub-genre of the music? There's some hiphop out there that plays like the lost soundtrack to 2001 with amazing music and scifi inspired lyrics.. There's also rappers talking about shining shoes.. Rap, like every genre, is varied and complex.Hating rap based on the 50cents of the world is like judging rock based on Avril Levigne instead of the Beatles...
