I'd prefer to look good than try and score points based on unfounded respect\admiration\sympathy for a uniform. When I see people wearing dress uniforms at weddings, I think of a brain washed West Pointer I knew that wrote an OPORD for his wedding. When I see people wearing dress uniforms at bars or other places, I think they're just using the uniform for their own purposes.

For what it's worth, I've only ever worn my dress uniform when it was required for formals, funeral detail and CNO duty. When I've accompanied a female service member to her formal, I always opt to wear a tuxedo instead of a dress uniform. I just look and feel better in a tux than a dress uniform. :|

Wow.. that makes me feel like you were ashamed of it as well..

disgraceful.. its a privilege to get to wear those blues.. not so much to wear a tux.. and every Tom Dick or Harry can put on a Tux.. blues are earned and should be worn with pride. the same pride it took to earn them.

Yeah, there's a lot of self-hate or shame going on there. The people that get the most excited when you show up in blues are the family. They are usually pretty damn proud of their Marine/Soldier/Sailor/Airman.

Old vets from other wars coming up and talking to you and exchanging stories because they see you in your uniform is something very unique to what we do.

Why someone would be ashamed of that are try to hide it is something I don't quite get.

Like I said, I don't want the attention that goes with them. If someone wants to respect\idolize someone in a dress uniform, I recommend they go to a military funeral. Those service members that gave their lives deserve their respect more than me.

I consider it modesty on my part more than being "ashamed." Coupled with the fact that I just don't like how they look.

You guys seem to consider the attention\admiration you get while wearing a dress uniform as a perk of service. It's a perk I'm not interested in.

There are many civilians like me who would greatly appreciate more chances to show our appreciation to the men and women who protect us.

I feel really awkward about a lot of that. Every time the server tells me that someone paid for my lunch out in town I feel super awkward. Like, how much of your taxes already go to defense spending? Buying me lunch is really unnecessary. :\

And how much of that "defense budget" ends up in a Soldier/Marines/Sailors actual pocket..
pennies.. (not that I'm saying pay was even anything I did it for.)

A person that does this is just saying thank you for doing what you do..and doing it for so much less than we deserve for doing it..

During Fleet Week after Desert Storm Part 1 we were out in NYC and we ended up at one of the very expensive high end strip clubs.. near times square.
We walked in with about 10 of us Sailors and Marines.
before we even sat down a very well dressed gentlemen walked up to us with the manager of the club..
they introduced themselves. the gentleman was the CEO of McGraw-Hill Publishing he told us and the manager that we were not to pay for a thing that night.. dances.. drinks whatever was on his tab..
he shook every one of our hands and said that he wanted to thank us.

blew us all away.. never had anything like that happen to me before.

but sure was nice to hear after spending all that time on the DS War Cruise on JFK.

Never had meals or anything else comped just for uniform.. (I did get special treatment back then for having a Military ID in clubs though 17-20 I drank like I was 21 every night "old enough to serve old enough to drink here")

The good old days..

I understand your point of view. For us humble folk, it may be the only chance we have to show our appreciation. It makes us feel good to be able to show it. There is always a delicate balance between accepting gratitude and humility. I'm sorry that it makes you feel uncomfortable but we are just trying to give back a little to those who give so much.

One of the best things you can do is send care packages to deployed soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen overseas. That's something that we all truly appreciated. No matter your branch of service, virtually everyone is doing a ground based mission in Iraq\Afghanistan these days.
