Why do my USB WiFi cards work better than my PCMCIA cards?

My PCMCIA cards (linksys and netgear) always cause problems. My friends d-link and my own netgear wg111 USB NEVER give me trouble.

The only thing I have noticed is that of the dozens of formats (XP Pro SP1) I have done without SP2 updates, the PCMCIA cards work EVERY time as flawlessly as the USB cards. As soon as SP2 is fully downloaded, problems abound. This is true on all three of my lappies. And, none of the three have internal WiFi either so that's not an issue.

Side-note: I am currently working on a friends Satellite M35X-S161 with same issues. I disabled it's internal WiFi but did not help. I have also disabled encryption on Netgear WGT624 v.2 router to eliminate access problems to router.

I realize that I may have answered some of my own questions but I would still like to know what is going on and why. TIA
