Why do my shoes squeak?

I bought a very nice pair of dressy rockports about a year ago. About six months ago the left shoe began to squeak when I walk. I can prevent the squeak when I curl my toes up in that shoe but otherwise it squeaks like a mouse when I bend the foot to move forward. I doesn't squeak as loud when on carpeting but on hard floors, so loud that it's making me self-conscious. These are the most comfy shoes I own otherwise I'd ditch them!!
