Why do my earbuds keep dying?

My sennheiser cx300 buds have gone mute in the left ear. This happened with a first pair, which I rma's: I've been figuring it was a flaw of too much stress on the left line due to the asymmetric wires of the cx300.
I had bought an inexpensive pair of skullcandy buds last year when I had lots of studying and couldn't find my sennheisers. The wires are symmetric, and again; the left began cutting out intermittently. Now the right is dead, and the left still cuts in and out. Seems the break is near the plug.

I think I take good care of my headphones- my friend wraps his buds around his ipod (fairly tight too) and not one problem.

Reason's for my touch of death to earbuds, and how to avoid continuing this once I get my ass to rma the two? I'm in the dumps right now- using a crappy behind-the-ear pair of koss headphones I got for free w/ rebate @ compusa probably >10 years ago. Even the inline volume control on those doesn't work!

any reasons why the damage to my headphones wouldn't be covered under warranty and open to rma?

How loud are you listening? You can damage any speaker by playing it too loudly.

I listen to my music at a very low volume. that is one of the reasons why I like earbuds- don't have to turn the volume up to drown out ambient sounds

Do you fold the cord near the jack when you use it? I had a pair of headphones die on me because of that.

from my past experience earbuds die because of the pull on the cable. try to handle them carefully, hold the earbuds instead of the cable when pulling them out of the bag, etc.
