why do mp3 players have FM but not AM tuners?

From what I understand, it's two reasons:

1) Nobody wants AM radio.

2) An effective AM antenna has to be bigger than an effective Fm antenna

Hold an AM radio next to just about an electric current or motor. Extension cord, power tool, hard drive, etc.. See for yourself.

If you study ee, you probably know that the length of the antenna is related to the wavelength. (frequency)

FM using higher frequency so its antenna is smaller and thus easier to design with specific size constraint.

An AM antena would have to be worn as a belt, not a belt clip.

nope. i listen to the radio to hear music, not talk.

Considering the crap that most radio stations play these days I wouldn't be too proud of that.

I do, but then to you I probably am an old geezer :p (I'm 26). Sports and Coast to Coast AM are excellent reasons. FM radio is what I don't understand. How can anyone listen to the same three teenybopper songs over and over? Talk electrical engineering all you want, the fact is walkmans have always had AM tuners and are similar in size to the bigger (hdd-based) mp3 players. Lack of an am tuner is actually a big factor - possibly the deciding one - in my decision not to buy the iRiver 40gb model - I came pretty close.

Yes he does. If I want to listen to music, I'll listen to the MP3's (or CD's, or whatever) that I choose. Not whatever crap they happen to be playing. Listening to FM sucks.

But most of the time I listen to talk radio. Sports radio, home/auto repair, Tom Martino, Lars Larson, Dr Laura, Bill O'Reilly, etc... All of it is more interesting than anything FM provides.

You'll change your mind when you get older!

Yup, the Neuros. I love the player, but the company's business model bothers me. They keep delaying the rollout of new products and firmware. The product seems excellent though.

I interned for a guy who designed a product for mac's called the shard (for listening to fm and am via your desktop/laptop) and it took us forever to figure out the am antenna. Those things are such a pain to design

Yeah, AM is a shaky radio system, and a larger antenna is needed because in order to have good reception, you must catch the AM waves at their peaks.
