Why do most people I know who volunteer for non- profits have $$$

Have you ever met anyone who works for a HMO that doesn't have too much $$?? Didn't the president of the American Red Cross make $500k during the 9/11 disaster? You folks ever wonder how much money the CEO of some of the largest HMO in America ever make?? I do question the wisdom of helping out some of these organizations.

Any comments??

Not certain about any of the organizations to which you are referring, but a lot of the people on the boards of large non-profits are indeed wealthy. How else do you think they are afforded the freedom to spend so much time in an organization without compensation?

They still make salaries. These non-profit companies make money to pay for there funds, and there executives. It's non-profit though in the sense that they do not sell a service.

wtf... HMOs are non-profits? Volunteers make money? Huh?

Yeah they pay people salaries, it's hard to run an organization entirely on volunteers.

kritical, I think you're wrong about what makes them non-profits - the Salvation Army is a non-profit, but they sell stuff. I think they're considered non-profits because they in fact do not make any profit (salaries are expenses and therefore are not profits...)

Edit: A better term is "not for profit" as opposed to non-profit
