Bose products work well, and better than many give them credit for. I agree though that they're overpriced for what you get, and would never buy one. Considering the lauded "Apple Quality", I sure seem to see a lot of "O NOEZ my ipod broke!!" posts here.. and on ipodlounge.. Please don't make the "but other players break too" argument after making the "the money buys you a player that breaks less" argument.
SORRY - but my best friend from college has worked for Bose for 7 years. She's fairly senior there. And even SHE says that the quality of their home audio systems sux bad. The ONLY good home audio product Bose ever made was the original 901s. My friend gets Bose gear to try for free...she had me hook up 3 different sets of Bose sat/sub speakers and components for a few months...eventually she returned all of it, and used her employee discount to buy sets of 901s.
Bose has SIGNIFICANT problems because their satelllites are too small to drive a deep midrange. Therefore, the "subwoofer" is really a midrange-bass woofer. Midrange is directional - so by putting all the mids into the .1 box, stereo (or 5.1) imaging is destroyed.
This is a FUNDAMENTAL design flaw of all of bose x.1 crap. They have marketed their "invisible" satillites to the point where they can't correct it. On top of that, their speakers themselves are made of less-than-top notch components - paper cones? in 2005? In "high-end" gear? hell no...
