Why do male acapella groups sound better than women or mixed acapella groups?

So I'm listening to the UC Men's Octet during a YouTube vision quest and I'm digging them. But, then I'm clicking around and come across this, which clearly sucks assballs. Is it just me or do they all sound like they're trying to sing over each other with too much vibrato? Maybe I just picked the wrong group? But it seems like even mixed groups suffer from shrieky female vocals.

Don't know really and didn't watch your vids, but generally speaking Males have greater Vocal range which might be the reason.

better?

vocally, you can sound extraordinary and sing to a song that everyone thinks is terrible and still say they're wonderful.

I say now, if you think you're so hardcore with this kind of stuff, find us a trance song with this kinda singin' j/k

Try the Anonymous 4, Trio Mediaeval, Hilliard Ensemble, Alia Mvsica, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Angelite, or the Tallis Scholars for examples of very good women's and mixed acapella groups. Pop music generally isn't suited to acapella ( The Nylons exempted from this generalization, of course).

Where would they use it, in the automatic teller machine machine?

Also, with acapella choirs, its imperative that the members are chosen carefully so that their voices blend with each other. Any acapella choir that is carefully matched will sound good.

Its always cool hearing a good acapella choir punch out 8 note jazz chords in quick succession, not something easy to do, but just sound phenomenal.

Jeff Thatcher, the vocal percussionist for the Blenders is amazing.

Guys groups are better because I think the playfulness comes through often. Guys generally goof around and have fun, where as mixed groups and groups of girls have the problem of having more than one girl in a 10 ft area...and then tend to be more critical of each other and serious. Plus lower range is more appealing to people and the low to mid harmonies sound better.

All the guy groups I've been in are all about entertainment, where as the mixed groups were focused on tonal perfection.

UPenn Off the Beat
MIT Logrhythms
UNC Cleffhangers - Impression that I get = Best Contemporary Arrangement Ever
Tonic Sol Fa- Amazing professional group, bass guy is pure sex
Blender's had some ok stuff, but too much pop for me, great at jingles though (Gummy Bears, Carmen Sandiego, Folger's)

lower pitches harmonize better. higher pitches tend to stand out and grab attention. its not coincidence that cellos and basses are usually given supportive roles in orchestras while violins get to hog the melody.

Having seen numerous single-gender a capella groups perform, I have to agree. I think it might be because women's voices are generally higher pitched, clearer, and don't blend as well as male voices. It also might be because female voices are generally trained more as "solo voices", though I think this is just me talking out of my ass.

That would be an interesting idea for an a cappella group.

The Cal Men's Octet is also a lot more famous, won a ton more awards, and is more selective than the Golden Overtones. They are simply a league above.

Well, 8 years later, I'd like to comment. I can't resist. The net never forgets, and I just found this. This comment is still searchable.

I'm Jeff Thacher (no "t" in the middle). I was never in the Blenders. I'm the vocal percussionist for Rockapella, whom you've enjoyed as per above songs... except, neither we nor the Blenders ever did the Gummy Bears theme song. It's some collegiate a cappella track. If you're actually speaking of me in your praise, thanks!

Which brings up a good point to make: Some dude in the 1990s uploaded Gummy Bears and a bunch of other collegiate-sounding stuff to Napster, mislabeled it "Rockapella", and it spread like a virus. Still lingering. I warmly invite you and other readers to check us out at rockapella.com, facebook.com/rockapella, twitter: rockapellamusic, and YouTube:rockapelladotcom. Our real stuff is on iTunes, and of course the streaming sites. If it's not on iTunes, it's not us...it's some big group of 12-15 college guys. Hopefully streaming will kill off the mislabeled stuff. As of the year you wrote this (2007), we had 6 US pop albums, 2 holiday albums, 2 live albums, and a bunch of international stuff. Since then, we've put out an album of originals, a Motown album, and a new holiday album. We continue to tour. It's possible you formed your opinions based on the file sharing tracks...if not, best wishes to your 2015 self :). Oh; and the Blenders are nice guys too... peace
