Why do magic eye things tell you to cross your eyes?

Inspired by this thread.

I've never understood this. Everyone says to "cross your eyes" to make 3d images work, which is wrong. You're supposed to relax your eyes so that each eye points straight forward, each one pointing directly at one of the images.

😕

Or you could cross your eyes and get the same result? If you cross them, you're still looking at one picture with each eye, no?

If you cross your eyes, you're looking at the wrong picture with each eye, and the image will appear inverted... But have you ever tried to keep your eyes focused while crossing them? I can't do that.

Errr, I just did from that thread. Picture didn't appear inverted at all. Why would the picture appear inverted? It's not like by crossing your eyes you're changing the star thing that makes everything appear "rightside up."

I mean that things that should recede would apear to come forward, and vice versa. I bet you didn't cross your eyes. If the images look like they are coming together and merging, you are relaxing your eyes, not crossing them.

I assure you I am crossing them. I can't relax my eyes on command for something so close to my face. Eventually I do relax them but the intial process is crossing them. Whether or not by making the picture come into focus I am relaxing them, I do not know. I guess I could take pictures.

I did the magic eye things wrong for a long time. I was always crossing my eyes and seeing images that I could identify, but they weren't very clear. Then one day I leared how to REALLY do it and it was like a slap in the face, the images where so much clearer. After that I found looking at them more enjoyable as crossing your eyes for a long period of time is painful.

Ahh! The image in that thread IS made for crossing your eyes, according to my analysis in Photoshop. But I seriously doubt that anyone can cross their eyes and do it properly, yet I was relaxing mine, staring into infinity, and seeing a 3dish image. I suspect it's just the mismatching that causes your brain to say "wow this is amazing". Here, I've swapped the sides so it should work better when you relax your eyes. http://earthic.net/3d.jpg

I could never do the relaxed eye thing but those crossed eye ones in the other thread I can get pretty easily.

I always told people trying to see it to try to look through the picture and see it with their peripheral vision. Then focus on what comes up.

because there are multiple methods for seeing those things. one is to cross your eyes. theres an explanation of those pics in "how the mind works" by steven pinker or whatever. u read it and u still are 😕
