Why do Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield have different last names?

They always refer to each other as brothers..but are they really only half brothers with different dads? It's referenced that they have the same mother, but I could swear they have the same dad..of whom left when they were kids.

wikipedia lists that Michael takes his mother's maiden name when daddy ditched the family before he's born.

I don't remember ever hearing it on the show though.

as great as the show is, i dont see how many seasons this show can last. what, they get arrested at end of season 2, plan escape at season 3, lather, rinse, repeat?
