Can someone explain why Japanese people immigrate to the U.S.? I can see why people from poor countries like Mexico come here, but why would someone leave a first world country like Japan? Personally, I know I wouldn't want to move to Japan and have to go through the hassle of adjusting to the culture and learn Japanese.

Why do Americans watch anime? I keep waiting for it to make sense. Maybe Japanese immigrants are looking for some sense?

I've wondered this as well. I just assumed it may have some poorer areas that I don't know about or that maybe there is an inherent desire in all Japanese people to buy a teriyaki restaurant in a strip mall, only to sell it five months later.

Because the western culture is irresistably "cool" to the Japanese. Fashion, culture, lifestyle, supposed freedom etc. is all desirable to the rather normalized, sterile, although seemingly crazy and progressive culture of Japan. Most of them return only to be disappointed.

Emigrate fool.

I'm from a first world country and I'd move to the US if I could get into MIT. I'd move to japan just to learn Japanese - maybe that's another reason they would move to the US, to learn English.

My parents came for my dad's post doc. Which was supposed to be 1year then turned into 5years then 10 and a green card before they went back.

I came back to the US after that because US post-secondary education > *, for science majors there's more oppurtunity to be published as an undergrad/before grad school compared to Japan. I know a number of students who have done this, depending on what you are looking to do a US degree is highly desirable. Plus being fluent in English is a plus.

My uncle and his family were here for 5years when he was working for a Mitsubishi subsidiary setting up factories, now he is working in Malaysia and Shanghai.

Right now I work with a bunch of chinese MDs and PhDs, they do post doc work then return to China with a better resume.

It's not supposed to be emigrate.

I'd imagine it's the same reason anybody moves, they want to do something different are bored where they're at.
