why do I treat everyone like co-workers?

It's very rare that I get close to people I meet. I just don't have that personality maybe? Someone in the past has told me that "I treat them like a co-worker" even though they wanted to befriend me.

Even at the workplace, I get along with everyone just fine but at the end of the day, it feels like some keep in touch like real friends and go visit each other in their hometown but not me. And in my experience, the more I try, the more pushed away they get so I always thought it would be best to let them come to me.

I'd like to say it's your poor personal hygiene and your atrocious fashion sense, and, yes, both of those are contributing factors, but the deeper reasons are your unfortunate physical ugliness, your deficient personality, and your basic unlikability.

But don't worry. Eventually you'll die and all this will be behind you.

So cheer up!

I'm like this too man. I don't get close to peeps. I got plenty of people I would call friends, but to me friends means you might be someone I see in classes. In engineering you tend to see a lot of the same people again so we talk between classes, in the lab, and sometimes play ball.

But I don't call them, they don't call me, and that's how it is.

I got one person that I still call weekly from high school, but everyone else is "if you're around me presently, you get my attention, if you aren't, don't feel bad 'cause that's just how I roll."

I'm the same way. I don't TRY to be friends with anyone and just keep them as acquaintances until they gravitate towards me as well. It's hard for me to pretend to like someone enough to have daily convos with them when I don't care. I know this might hurt me in my career but it's the way I am and it hasn't been bad so far. So pretty much, I'll initiate, be friendly etc, but I won't go that extra mile to make them a friend, unless they show some signs of interest. I think it's a defense mechanism so that I don't befriend fake, douchebag people. There once was a time where i would go that extra mile, but that ended in grade school.

I think what you're referring to is becoming more of the norm. Just be yourself and don't try to act like someone you're not. I'd say most people would rather keep work separate from their family lives.

If you didn't want to be ridiculed, you wouldn't have posted here...you'd have posted in L&R...somewhere that knows how to deal with relationship issues...:p

I've never been able to get close to people. Maybe it stems from seeing a few good friends killed in Vietnam, (shame on me for befriending anyone in combat) or maybe it's from getting screwed over/ripped off by folks who were "good friends," over the years...I dunno, and I'm not about to pay a psychiatrist to find out...:D (ain't a-gonna go there...I'm afraid of what I MIGHT accidentally find out about Boomer) :D

I have always had my "work-friends" with whom I'm good friends on the jobsite, but don't associate with after work. I doubt that will ever change.

"I gotta work with ya, I don't have to hang out with ya on my own time."

Gotta say I'm the same...

Throughout my entire time at school, people have tried to befriend me and get closer. They'd ask me to go places, but I always said I was busy or whatnot (I wasn't, got nervous for some reason). Same thing at work, I think I got hit on twice at my last last job. Either I was too blind or too stupid; I always ended up saying I was busy or pushing them away. So here we are...

Yep, I am pretty much the same way. If I am invited somewhere or out to lunch or something, I will almost always accept. But I never ask or press myself upon people. Also, if I mention I am doing something and someone asks to come with, I almost always accept. I get along great with everyone around me at work or school but usually just keep the relationships centered around those locations. I have like 3 or 4 close friends who I hang out with or talk to on a regular basis outside of school/work.
