Why do I still have 8.5GB of restore files on my OS drive?

Running WinXP pro.

TreeSize Pro tells me I have 8,488.7MB of retore files in my System Volume Info.

That is alot considering I have disabled System Restore on all drives.

Can I safely get rid of these files, if so how?

Well I just deleted the file in question through TreeSize Pro.

Wonder why they were still there?

Not sure, but I would have just deleted them like you did. It would be interesting to see if the Disk Cleanup Wizard would have deleted them.
