shouldn't there be options in those later software to be able to upload pics on the web?

Assuming you keep your Gmail or Dropbox forever, sure. And never move the contents inside of it, or change the share permissions. The nice thing about sites like Imgur & co is that they are permanent & historical, so they're (hopefully) going to be around forever. Like if you write a useful tutorial & post pics to Imgur, it'd be nice for someone to still be able to dig up the pictures 10 years from now because you don't have to worry about the long-term hosting of it.

forever is a tricky word

tinypic isn't forever
Q: How long are images kept?
A: The images are kept until they have not been viewed for 90 days. After 90 days have elapsed, your image may be removed.

imgur says forever*

*until death of service or takeover by another company perhaps

Which is still more likely to be longer than someone deleting, moving, or changing share permissions in a cloud storage service.

Not to mention that these services can disable hotlinking at any time. They are *not* image hosting services like imgur or tinypic. It's just not what they're designed to do.
