Why do I lose my USB mouse?

Not sure if this is an OS or HW problem. I randomly lose my USB mouse. I currently have it plugged into the USB port on my keyboard, but this happens regardless of which port (I have 4 ports + hub on my motherboard + 2 on my keyboard). I have a USB printer that does no experience problems. To my knowledge, the keyboard does not freeze (it is plugged in to both a USB and PS2 connector and I'm not sure which controls the actual keyboard vs all the shortcut keys).

I can usually just un-plug and then plug it back in and things are fine (this is why I use the keyboard USB port instead of the one on the back of my CPU). I suspect this may cause my machine to lock-up when I can't get the mouse "back".

Any ideas?

i suspect it's hardware related. i'd use/borrow a usb to ps2 adapter and try the mouse in your ps2 port. or try the mouse on a different computer. if same prob occurs, then most probably mouse/usb connector on mouse no good.
