Why do I like the originals a lot more then the cover songs?

ndee

Lifer
Cuz it's more "real" or... why? Those songs rock, Diana Ross - I'm coming out. More soul in those songs?

Because most covers aren't done in seriousness or sincerity. It's often done as a joke or for "fun".... and more often than not the band doing the cover is much less talented than the band that wrote the original. And plus the fact that the original authors WROTE THE DAMN SONG so they know exactly how they wanted it to sound, how it was meant to be done, etc.

Pearl Jam - Last Kiss is a pretty good cover though, IMO. Bands like Me First and the GImme Gimmes do a lot of covers. Most people I talked to thought it was garbage, but people who are into punk style music usually enjoy their music.

All I know is I was about to puke when I heard that heartless soulless remake of "Don't dream it's over" on the How to lose a guy in 10 days commercial. Counting Crows just remade a Joni Mitchell song that's been remade a couple other times the past few years. WTF? You can't write a song of your own? You think your remake is somehow more worthly than the fifteen others?

And can rap songs PLEASE stop samples the Isley freakin brothers?!?! Thank freakin you!

That's different. Remaking a song that's been long forgotten or was never really heard or originated outside your genre is more noble, but "Don't dream its over?" that thing has been on the radio daily for almost twenty years and is widely considered one of the great songs of the eighties and your two-bit corporate pop rock band is gonna touch it?

i enjoy most of the covers Metallica did on Garage, Inc. better than the original artists, so sue me.

Wha? Most of the cover songs I hear is sort of like a homage to the band they are covering like a little thank you or maybe just to show what the bands influences are or what they listened to when they were younger. And alot of covers just because they sound different from the original doesn't mean thats not how they are "supposed" to sound. Everyone has their interpretation and sometimes its interesting to hear a song you've heard so long one way done in another.

I agree most covers suck major donkey dong. The rare cover song that is up to par with, if not better than, the original is usually something that is out genre boundaries, or just completely out of the ordinary. I still say there's only two ways to make a good cover song....

1. - Cover it EXACTLY to a "t", and show your musicianship through how closely you can re-create the sound of the original.
2. - re-arrange it entirely, and make it completely different, but loosely based on the original.

My .02

Like J-Lo's - All I have, she's gettin' sued by Debra Laws cuz I think she sampled that song without "authorization" (Debra Laws wrote, sang the original)

I like alot of punk covers....Uptown girl, Time after time, just to name a few. Last Kiss by Pearl Jam was good too, Cats in the Cradle by Ugly Kid Joe, Turn the Page Metallica, Knockin on Heaven's Door Guns N Roses, All along the Watch Tower, Jimmy Hendrix all covers I really like.

The original meaning the drinking song?

I know a few examples that buck that trend. Listen to any song written and sung by Bob Dylan, then listen to almost anybody else's cover of that same song.

Here's one by Michael Nesmith: original

Here's the cover 😎
