No it shouldn't be that way. List your setup and how everything is laid out right now.

alright i got a timerwarner RCA cable modem or router whatever you call it.

ethernet cable plugged into it that goes into a new d-link 8 port switch.

5 other ethernet cables plugged into the switch that go to my computer , another to my office computer, a spare one that goes to a laptop that sometimes i put on my desk and 2 others that go to jacks in other parts of the house.

I always have problems whenever a new computer is connected, for example when i plug my laptop in, i have to play with the modem reseting and turning it on and off and eventually my laptop becomes connected.

Cable modem = cable company connected to this
Router = hands out IP addresses and does the network routing

It is possible to have a combination modem/router. What model is that RCA because most RCA's I've seen are modems only. You would need a router to take the one IP address you have for your account and hand out IP's to each computer.

I think your right, i think the RCA is a modem only.

So can you link me to what i need to buy?

From what i understand, the modem needs to go into a router (that i have to buy) which goes into a switch( that i already have 8 port dlink)

piotrgurin,

your setup should be: TimeWarner cable modem connected to router (built-in DHCP & switching) connected to your computer(s). the router will take the one external IP address and will hand out internal IP addresses to all computers connected to it. It will also handle all the switching, so that is the only piece of hardware (besides maybe some CAT5 or CAT6 cabling) you will need. Do you want/need wireless? here are a couple of suggestions:

Wired - Linksys BEFSR41
Wireless - Linksys WRT54G

You just need the switch if the router you get doesn't have enough ports.

Cable Modem -> Router -> PCs or switch or whatever else you have.
