Why do I have to keep renewing my lease????

Ok, this is royally pissing me off. For the past 2 days I have had to keep renewing my IP lease on the school network, because my connection would slow down and eventually quit. I have to do this at least 2x every hour. My roommates all have to do it too, so it isn't my problem.

What could be causing this? It started 2 days ago, no matter which operating system I am running (I have 2k and XP, and my roomates have either ME or 98, so we have all the bases covered) it still happens.

Someone setting the dhcp server with ip leases that are too short? Haven't worked with dhcp in awhile myself though.

Thanks, I'm going to call the school's networking service tomorrow to tell them what's going on.

but won't leases renew themselves once they expire?

i have had this happen to me on my university dorm connection. i could transfer data between my friends in other dorms and rooms no problem, but when i started to download something from the net the transfer would slow down and eventually stop. i complained and complained to them that a router must be broken on the local network. they did not believe me till i showed them personally and had a few other friends complain about the same problem and suggest a fix.... it took a few days and they replaced the router and everything was back to normal again... you have to be persistant with the university tech bureaucrats....

Win 2k and XP will start attempts to renew thier lease at 50% of its expiration time. The probelm here is most likely related to either the DHCP server itself or a router on your netowrk.
The DHCP server may be set up improperly with conflicting scopes, or perhaps reservations/exclusions were done poorly.
On the other hand, their could be a problem with a router, maybe its tables are fubar'd.
You can rest assured though that this problem is definetly on the network and not on your machine
