Why do I have 2 of each ATA/ATAPI controllers?

I think I have found the source of my computer's constant blue screens, but I need to confirm something.

In Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, I have 2 of each of the controllers. Here is a screenshot of the list.

I think there should only be one of each, and the exta ones are what I think are causing and confusing my computer into crashing when I use the CD/DVD drives.

My configuration is:
Primary IDE cable has one CD-RW drive as master.
Secondart IDE cable has one DVD drive as master.

Primary cable goes into IDE1 on the mainboard.
Secondary cable goes into IDE2 on the mainboard.

Why do I have 2 of each? When I remove any one, they come back after a restart.

Normally there would only be one. However some mobos have unusual configurations. What make and model is the mobo?

You may have dual IDE controllers if it's a high-end board. Also some mobos that have both SATA and IDE controllers will show up like yours does.

If neither has an error code I would have to assume that they both physically exist. See if they're using different resources.

My mainboard is the MSI 875P Neo-FISR. It is a SATA confgured drive. Maybe it is normal then? Hmm...

Just looked at mine. It is ASUS P4C800-E & it has dual listings, just like yours. I am also using SATA Seagate drive. Everything is running fine on my system.

Hi, Windoze sometimes loads the same drivers twice or more times for some unexplainable reason. They don't usually cause any problems. Look from safe mode and you may see lots of junk drivers you used to use. I remove all of the extras. Windoze loads back what it needs. Carefull if you are not sure. Luck, Jim

Can also add the system variable DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES, to truly allow showing all hidden devices and remove many old grayed out ones.
