You practically have to be running 1152x864 with your browser maximized to avoid the scroll bar. The reason is because the site was designed with a fixed width layout and fonts that do not scale (not in IE anyway, but sometimes in Mozilla). Definitely not a smart design, given that many people still run 800x600. Unless they figure that anybody high tech enough to visit AnandTech likes a constantly maximized web browser and has a new enough monitor to run at least 1152x864. :frown:

"You practically have to be running 1152x864 with your browser maximized to avoid the scroll bar. " Huh? I run 1024x768 on my laptop with no horizontal scroll bar.

Actually all you need is 1024x768, and it works perfectly fine. I've tested numerous times on all browsers. Something else must be causing the scrolling client side, as it doesnt do that here on several test platforms.

works fine foe me at 1024x768. In Opera 7, IE6 and Mozilla. must be something on your end.

i typically run at 1600x1200 so its a non issue for me

Zuni, the width was maximzed, I just shortened up the height so the display size box would show. It's no big deal to me, I can still see 99.9% of the width.

Zuni....I'm on IE 6 and I'm pretty sure that it is a problem with the AT site......it does not happen to any othersite.....The horizontal scrollbar is visible when the window is tiled horizontally but goes away when the browser is maximized.......Hope this can help you troubleshoot the problem.....if you want to see a screenshot I'd be glad to give one

I dont think it is, as for most its fine. It's a browser setting client site somewhere thats causing it I think. Until it happens on a machine here I can't really do anything about it as its working fine here and for most other users..

Thanks

I see what it is. If I make the window the slightest bit less than maximized, I get the scrollbar. So, surf maximized ;)

They designed that thing down to the last pixel so that it fits in a maximized browser window at 1024x768. I have a feeling if someone were to use a scrollbar that were 1 pixel wider, it would put in a horizontal scroll bar as well (haven't tried this to confirm). Plus, the fonts are not resizable in IE, so I guess people with vision problems better use Mozilla or Opera, and be willing to put up with a messed up layout in the process. Fixed width layouts are ok to a point, if that point is the lowest common denominator (say 800x600), but fixed fonts and everything else, plus a higher common denominator of fixed width layout, are not good at all. :frown:

jliech, again 800x600 is on its way out as a standard, and most all of our users are 1024+ the site looks great at 1024 maximized. We can't design for every user out there, so we designed for the majority.

Cheers

That could very well be it. I always run my scrollbars a little on the wide side.
