this happens consistently, year round.
25 mpg from one place (gulf/hess next to each other, doens't matter which), 30 from another maybe 5 miles away (sunoco).

maybe you're filling up the tank more when you gas up at sunoco...and then fill it up a little less when you fill up a gulf/hess???? <--- just a shot in the dark

Could be gas formulation. We don't deal with it here, but I know there is some additive or whatever that causes poor gas mileage used in some areas.

I know someone who found that. One places gave much worse mileage than another.

Not all fuel is created the same, there will be different impurities etc in the fual, this might effect the quality of gas, and how well it works in your car.

so is it safe to assume gas that gives better mileage to be better for the car?

Personally I don't think they'd be that far off. Are you sure you are getting tanks full and you have calculted this correctly?

I'd say there is little to no difference.

Have you considered that maybe the amount of gas you have in your car can affect it, because that is a bit of extra weight to carry. I've noticed that I get better mileage when I keep my car around half a tank. I couldn't tell you why, but I know it's saving me money ;)

I don't think it's worse or better for the car...but rather the environment and pocketbook....

The lower mileage fuel is called 'oxygenated gas', this is the first link I saw that verified that name Google Link

On the car boards I am on West Coasters complain alot about it and I think its more common in the winter months.
