Here I was, surfing the intArnet and low and behold I find myself lacking stimulation. Quickly putt-putting through my programs list (my computer is just that slow) I decide to flip on Winamp, despit the damage to my internet speed that it will invariably cause (yes my internet connection is that slow) and despit the fact that anytime I scroll anything it interupts the play (again, do I need to point out the suckiness of my system). Nonetheless, I loaded up my 'general' playlist, featuring artists ranging from Bizkit to Wynonna Judd. (Hey, a little I Will Testify to Love is all I need sometimes.)
Anyway, back to my point. I was surfing and listening to some Limp Bizkit and Rage Against the Machine. Suddenly, the song 'Bonny Portmore' by Loreena McKennit started playing into my ears through my headphones. For those of you unfamiliar with both the song and the artist, here is a quick overview. Loreena McKennit is a sort of folk singer, not country but more like she takes poems or old-english writings or other sorts of cultural music, generally english and celtic things and creates music from them. He has an increadible voice and the different types of instruments that she uses is remarkable. As for the song, if you have ever seen any of the Highlander movies, you have probably heard this song. It's a really sad-sounding celtic song with bagpipes, flutes and other indistinguishable instruments. If you ever saw the movie where McCloud is reforging his sword, it's the song they play when he's training in the highlands.
Anyway. When this song came on, I stopped what I was doing to listen to it. I then proceeded to repeat it about 3 times in sucession, feeling really sad the entire time. But I enjoyed the feeling. The song itself evoked an moving emotional response and I revelled in it. But that response was sadness, an emotion which one generally shouldn't like. So I am curious as to why in this situation, do I like a song that so easily makes me feel sad.
