Why do i download so slow?

ok my specs

fic az11
duron 800
128 pc133

u.s. robotics courier v.everything ext

i went to msn and tested my bandwidth and i got 37.5 and 38.0 kps both times

but when it comes to downloading i only get 4 or 5

what can i do?

Not much you can do, 56K modem you should be connecting at like 49-51K, but take in consideration phonelines and or MSN itself......but even if you were connecting at 51K, your downloads look about right, I would think 5.0 kbs is about average for a download, 6-7 being above average....but then again take in consideration the sites you are downloading at.....other than that dunno what to tell ya.
Have you considered checking out other ISP's in your area?

You may already know this, if so then just totally disregard this. But when it comes to internet connectivity everything is measured in kilobits and not kilobytes. So when you get the speed of 37.5Kb you are getting bits, not bytes. Divide that number by 8 and you will get your download speed on average. 37500 bits / 8 bits = 4.6KiloBytes per second. So you're just about right on the money man. I hope this helps you understand it a bit. I personally have a 5 megabit connection so I get a max of 625kilobytes per second. It's pretty simple once you get down to the basics of it.

I live in the sticks and my connection tops out at 24K, and I'm doing really well to get a 2K continuous downlaod, so suck it up and be happy with it.

i thought that my modem would run at 56k but i guess not

btw my connection is at 40,000 bps does that have a difference or does it matter?

bps is bits per second. So your maximum speed with that connection is 40,000 / 8 = 5,000 bytes therefore you're looking at approxmately 5KB/sec.

<< Go get broadband if it's available, if it's not be patient. >>

Agreed, especially if you have two pc's online and you're paying for second & third lines. It's WAY cheaper and faster as well.

I mean come on... 5KB/sec versus speed in excess of 600KB/sec, how can you lose?

<< You download so slow because you are on dial-up, get broadband. >>

You lack something... it's on the rip of my tongue... ah yes... tact.

I had a 56K, but could never connect faster than 28K because of the phone lines. BTW, divide bits/sec by 10 to get bytes/sec (there are 8 data bits +start bit+stop bit for each byte).

You can shotgun 2 modems to be 1 and increase your speed to 128, some modems won't work others will, do some research.
The other line will disconnect if the phone rings so you will run at 56 theoretically while the other phone is being answered.
It will then take you back to 128 when done.
