Why do I always assume things and passing my assumptions off as real info? And how do I stop myself from doing it?

yeh i know...assume = ass out of u and me

This is what happened:

i'm the interface between production and quality control. production has a new widget and has 4 phases of quality control.

production needs phase 1 OR phase 2 to pass to go on to phase 3. and all 3 phases to pass to go on to phase 4.

so phase 1 passes. they go on to phase 3.

when production asked me the question when phase 2 will start/end, i didnt have an answer. so i made something up that sounded logical. i told them since they don't need it go onto phase 3, it's considered lower priority and quality control will be working on higher priority projects.

i had no clue if quality control considered phase 2 lower priority, nor did i know if the particular engineering team assigned to this product even had higher priority projects at the moment.

so if production didnt like my answer and called quality control to complain, i would have been in trouble.

but i could have just made a simple phone call and asked quality control instead of taking this risk.

1) WHY DIDN'T I DO THAT? WHY DID I MAKE UP SOMETHING AND LIE INSTEAD???

2) AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, HOW DO I STOP MYSELF FROM DOING IT AGAIN?!?!

Thx

How are we supposed to know if this thread isn't just another one of your "assumptions" or not? Huh? :|

;) :D

Sounds like your a compulsive liar. Compulsions are hard to overcome by yourself, that's why they're compulsions.

hm..never thought of that...

thinking about assumptions is one thing, saying it as fact is another.

Neither your lie nor the phone call to find was the correct answer.

The correct answer could have been to have both stage 2 and stage 3 in the process at the same time, since they don't rely on each other.

Also simply saying "I don't know" is wrong too. The correct answer is always "I don't have an answer for you, but I will find out and get back to you right away."

When I do not know the answer to a question, I say "I am not sure on that one. Let me double check the answer and I will get back to you in a hour".

Easy. The next time somebody asks you a question, the first thing you should ALWAYS say, is "Let me think about that for a moment". Pause for about 10 seconds and remind yourself that either you A.) actually do know the answer or B.) are going to tell the person you'll find out and get back to them right away.

Program yourself to respond that way.
