Anyone got any tips on how to get better at MW2 multiplayer? I have been playing for weeks now and have yet to get a KD ratio > 1. I've had a kill streak of 5 maybe 2 times.

I don;t champion myself as a great FPS player, but I can usually hold my own. But no matter what I try, I always get owned. Heck, last night I died 19 times before I finally scored my first kill.

Anyone have any tips?

Oh, and if you want to boost your score at my expense, look for Pooptrap1-2-3-4. The name suits the skill of the player.

Don't sell yourself short. I'm a pretty good FPS player but I can't compete with many of those people. Many of the MW2 players came from games like Battlefield, Counterstrike, or UT2004/3 where they have been honing skills for years.

Just practice and try adjusting things like layout and mouse sensitivity to something more to your style.

I have years of quake and counterstrike experience so naturally good at mw2. The only tip I can give you is never stand still. Always keep moving.

If the fast pace aspect of the game doesn't suit your skills, you could always try sniping.

I run around and knife everyone, man do they get pissed.

I can run at someone at 50+ yeards and dodge them shooting me...in an open field, it's hilarious!

The best i've done is 51-2...got a nuke as well. But like mstele said...i've been playing FPS games like this for 8+ years, so the skills kick in. I should join a league, but I have no time.

If you want to get good though, take it slow, use your radar. Don't worry about killstreaks. Start off with using the M4A1, and get the noob tube (grenade launcher), if you aim near the person, it's an instant kill, and the M4A1 is a pretty decent Assault rifle anyway.

lol "nube tube" Does anyone remember when Battlefield Vietnam came out and the M60 had better accuracy than the m16 and the firing rate of a Phalanx? Using the M60 meant instakick until the patch came out. :p So fun

Try to play more conservatively. Don't camp, but don't just run around either -- the most important thing in CoD is knowing where the enemy is. Reflexes are important, but not as important as understanding your surroundings.

This.

MW2 is pretty much like every other mp fps that has a cult-like following in that most people playing a) dedicate A LOT of time to it, and b) have dedicated A LOT of time to other mp fps games in the past.

I haven't won a FFA death match in MW2 yet, but I still have fun and get some decent kills. I have definitely learned to slow down a little bit though. At first I was running all over the map like I did in Quake 3, but now I tend to crouch more to not make noise.

I was decent at MW1 but I've been really bad at MW2. I've always hated the radar map showing everyone exactly where you are when you fire an unsilenced weapon and when the UAV comes up.

I really want to play online but I keep hearing the cheating is insane. Hopefully it gets fixed.

This game is extremely challenging online. Moreso than any other shooter I've played, so you're definitely not alone there. It's weird, usually in FPS games there's lots of cannon fodder walking around. Players that are clueless and are just waiting to be slaughtered. I feel like in MW2 there are NONE of those players. Seriously, every time I come up against someone it feels like they have the jump on me and at best I have a 50/50 chance of taking them out.

Also, let's not forget there's definitely hackers out there and some of them are more obvious than others. That doesn't help matters.

But seriously, there are just no easy kills in this game it seems. I don't get it.

There's an old saying about poker, which applies to most games and situations in life...

There's always a patsy at the poker table. If you've been at the poker table for 30 minutes and you don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy. Look around. Do you see the patsy?

Hah, good stuff. I'm a casual gamer and you're right, often times I do feel like fodder in MW2. I'm pretty good at FPS games though, I mostly score in the top 3 in Battlefield games and I do just fine in MW2 too. I'm accustomed to getting plenty of easy kills in BF games, TF2 and Halo 3...etc. Those games seem to have easy kills aplenty.

MW2 doesn't seem to provide me as many. And enemies seem to ALWAYS know where I am so maybe I need to start using a silencer and ninja footsteps. Still need to unlock the ninja footsteps perk though...

Yeah, I was just teasing you. I'm actually experiencing the same thing as you. There really don't seem to be any completely horrible players in MW2 just dorking around waiting to get shot. Generally, when I've stumbled upon an easy kill it's because the player is trying to get to a hard to reach spot. That doesn't stop me from taking them down. :)

I have a tough time with MW2 online too. I'm pretty good at CS:S and TF2 online. I think it's a combination of:
- Not knowing the maps very well
- Having a hard time distinguishing players from the environment, due to the high level of detail
- Having such varied controls based on your gun

Everyone in this game sucks. Honestly, I dont understand it sometimes. Yes i see a lot of hackers, some more obvious and some less. But I've gotten over 20 nukes, etc etc. Im not saying Im pro or anything, I just find it damn easy.

Everyone seems to either camp in the game or they run around with 1887s blasting people away.

Yes, it's pretty tough. Especially when you get a group using overpowered weapons like the akimbo 1887, or stupid knifers. I've only seen a couple hackers and I play every night since release almost.

I have a 1.5 K/D ratio because I'm careful. I play TDM. I don't camp really but I take my time to not leave my back exposed. This shows in that I always get the Juggernaut accolade and the 6th Sense accolade.

I recommend general play with an assault rifle (M4 or SCAR), grenade launcher or optics if needed (iron sights on SCAR are good), stopping power, sleight of hand, and steady aim. You can switch off sleight of hand for scavenger if you run out of ammo with the SCAR.

With this basic setup you can start completing challenges pretty easily and doing decently.

In COD4, I played Hardcore TDM exclusively but in this I haven't done much HC.

I play on the max settings, I wonder if there's an advantage to playing on the lower settings...

BF2 used to punish people playing with Dynamic Shadows turned on...

Back in the day I used to run CS at 800x600. I dont know why, it was just what everyone did. Since i have a 5870 now, I just run mw2 at max everything.

What game type are you playing? Which gun, attachments, perks, etc?

Usually ground war or HQ pro. I generally do best at domination or HQ, simply because I have an idea where the enemies will be. Team deathmatch is an exercise in frustration.

I typically load out 1 of the following two ways:

1. M4A1 with red dot; machine pistol, stun grenades; marathon, stopping power and the interference perk (the one that jams radar)

2. one of the heavy machine guns (third one down), shotgun, slight of hand pro, stopping power, and interference.

I've been playing FPS games since they were invented, and always had some degree of success (though not stellar) with other online games. I was often in the top 2-3 players in most Battlefield games, and I'm a badass medic in TF2. Ah well. . . maybe I'm just getting old. Getting a bad case of gray finger.
