Why do hotels charge more for 3 people in a room rather then 2

It seems most people just automatically pick 2 for the number of adults staying in the room, unless there is some reason that it will be obvious to the hotel that there are more then that (such as spitting the bill 3+ ways).

i mean its not even a little more, some hotels cost a decent amount more if you have 3 rather then 2 people.

They charge more because they can. It costs them the same to have just one person staying in the hotel room as it does to have 2, but if they only have 2 beds, there's really no reason to charge for the 3rd person except to be greedy.

My guess is they figure the more people in the room, the more water/electricity/cleaning they'll need to do. That's the only rationalization I can come up with.

The bolded part is the universal answer to "Why do _________ charge more for _______?"

Business charges more for any extra option/break from normalcy because it increases revenue. At least they do if they are smart and looking at the bottom line intently.

They charge more ahead of time, but in person, they'll look at you and if you're not a group of teenagers, you won't be charged for it. I'v stayed in hotel rooms with 3-4 people many times and requested cots be brought in for the other guests without any problems.

I have lied, but if I'm going through Expedia or something I put in the correct number of people (since I'm usually buying airfare also). It does make sense to charge a little more for more people (water, towels, etc.) but some hotels gouge.
