Why do Home Depot and Lowes suck?

Isn't the purpose of a hardware store to sell hardware? Yet these stores never have what I need. When I wanted to build my mp3 player in a toolbox, they had tiny selections, smaller than Wal Mart. Now I'm trying to get acrylic or polycarbonate sheets, and they don't sell those anymore. All they have is freaking ceiling fans and light fixtures!!! Where am I supposed to buy building materials?!?!?!

Home Depot here rocks. I built my water cooling system many years ago out of parts from there. More recently I built a 1 bed/1 bath studio apt. from home depot stuff. They've always had what I needed...

Those aren't hardware stores. You want a hardware store - or an electronics store. Home Depot and Lowes are "home improvement" stores.

Yea, that's a big downside of Home Depot driving all the local hardware stores out of business. Despite their size, they often don't carry some of the more obscure items. Try getting a metric bolt at home-depot. They used to have a specialty parts rack that carried that stuff, but not anymore. I had to find the sole surviving Ace Hardware in Colorado Springs to get that.

we have a local chain of hardware stores here that competes very nicely with Home Depot. The great thing about hawaii is that people here tend to have very strong loyalties to local brands, products and stores

I once needed an offset box wrench just to use once, neither Home Depot nor Lowes had it. Sears did, but it was mega expensive. Then I went to Walmart and they had it -- cheap.
