Why do hockey refs allow the players to size each other up and fight?

when i watch espn...there's the daily highlight of two players circling each other while the ref stands there watching...is it due to safety reasons for the ref?

I hear that hockey in other countries rarely ever has fights like those in the US. Because of that, US hockey is considered a joke around the world...but that's just what I've heard

Dunno. My friends seem to enjoy it, but I find those lame. I actually get annoyed those few times I actually try to watch some hockey.

The only part you forget is that half of all pros are foreigners.

Fighting is a part of the game. As long as it is with two willing combantants, the refs will allow it to happen.

Stojak... Yes, fighting isn't a part of the Euro game. <insert french joke here> But the NHL is hardly considered "a joke" anywhere.

Still, the last Olympics with the best pros in the world ended with Canada beating the US. North American hockey is the best.

/glad to see the proper ph33r of Canadian hockey players :D

Fights in hockey are just a way to vent aggression and rile up a crowd. Plus, it's a little demoralizing to the other team when Tie Domi can stand six inches shorter and absolutely pummel his opponent into a quivering lump of jersey and shoulder-pads. :D

International hockey isn't even funny. Competition? <brutal check> Oh, that little smear along the boards. Dammit, I got Swede on my jersey. :p

Plus are you going to be the one to jump inbetween two extremely big guys ready to knock out more of each others teeth? I'll wait till they get a few good punches in before I get involved, gives me better chances.

Fighting in hockey actually serves a purpose. Part of it is for the crowd, but there is another role it plays. Not just anyone fights, there are specific 'enforcers' that are on the team basically to fight. When a good player get a cheap shot thrown at him, the enforcers come out and duke it out. Kinda like an unwritten law. Well at least thats how it used to be... Hockey has changed so much since say... the early 90s. It was a much better sport then, but I still love playing.

Out of the entire ATOT crowd, I think you're only the 2nd person aside from Murphy55D who says they play also. Unbelievable... you guys NEED TO PLAY SOME HOCKEY!!!!! Such a great sport...

At any rate... a few people have already stated the reasons...

1) Refs don't want to get involved because they would rather jump in after the 2 players have tired themselves out. True they can often stop the fight when the players are circling, but like stated before:

2) It's a way for players to vent their anger. IF this was not allowed, players would be swinging their sticks at each others' heads instead. Would you rather have that or would you rather let them drop the gloves ? Enforcer types are more called on to do this so the star/skill players don't hurt themselves. You wouldn't want your $5 mil/year player getting run at and you wouldn't want him breaking his hand in a fight either.

3) Crowd pleaser: also serves to motivate your team when the crowd gets riled up. In front of your home crowd, win a fight and your team is charged up. Lose it, and there's nothing hurt but their own ego. It can't be denied that people come to see fights because they want to see someone knocked out... which has happened a few times, with a single fist to the jaw... last time I recall that happening was some kid in Dallas halfway through this season... what a greatly timed left hook.

I play, and I agree playing is way more fun than watching. I used to be pretty decent, now I only play shinny occasionally because of lack of time :(

I'm an ice hockey international linesman, so better listen carefully:)

Hockey is a high contact and a very fast sport, that's one of the main reasons for fights. When you receive a tough bodycheck, you seek revenge.
There's very little you can actually do when a fight has started, the referee's job is to stop players before they actually start fighting.
The referee can't interfere in a fight, he just looks and writes down the players numbers and what penalty will be imposed. Linesmen should try to separate players in a fight, but only when they can grab both players at the same time, because if you grab only one of them the other will beat the sh*t out of him;)
