Why do hd make so much noise after 1 year of use?

All my 120gb 2-3 years are so cranky it's like a 10 year car 🙁
Thought I recently bought a few 160gb and it's so quiet.
It's like a car, start out quiet then get noisier as you use them.

I was thinking Maxtor.

Have you tried running scan disk to see if issues are arising? Also how often do you defrag?

On the safe side, back up your good sh*t 😉 Just in case

Yeah, so what makes Seagate so different. My dad has a Seagate 20GB in his computer, and it has become so loud that you would know that the computer is accessing the swap files even if you have headphones on.

And my Maxtor 80GB did go so much louder after 3 years of daily uses as well. However, it is less noticeable than the Seagate maybe there are more case fans?

I think he is talking about the Seagate Barracuda hard drive series and not one of the older desktop hard drives. Seagate has come a long way in quality and noise level.

They are referring to the new seagates model drives. My 3x160 GB in my RAID5 drives are extremely quiet compared to my older 120GB WD drives.
 
Samsung Spinpoint drives are also quiet.

You can reduce the noise made my just about any 3.5 inch drive by unscrewing it from the computer chassis, and suspending it with elastic in the case, or, alternatively, sitting the drive on a little piece of foam on the floor of the computer case.
 
I dont see why people whinge on about WD drives. My 80gig and 200gig arent loud by any stretch of the imagination and Im using 3 Panaflo L1A's. Not much noise to be honest.

Plus, I enjoy 4 year warranty on my WD Drives (according to the WD Warranty Checker).
 
Look for FDB (fluid dynamic bearing) motors. It's listed as a feature if the drive's got one. They start quieter, and stay quieter.

I've got a few (Seagate FDB) that are almost two years old, and all of them are still very quiet, especially if suspended on absorbent foam.
