Why do games do this during install?

After installing disk 8 of 8, it asks you to reinsert disc 1.

I think to myself.. If it needed something off disc 1, why didnt it grab it the FIRST time it was in the tray?

Usually that happens if they require you to have the 1st cd to run the program all the time, just to make sure you dont buy software, install it, then return it. Then again, you can just get a no-cd crack.

but most stores don't let you return opened software.

Then why can't they just make the play disc the last disc, and not require it to be the initial disc also?

I agree OP that this is annoying and silly.

a number of reasons (all of which might be wrong)

* to play the game you have to put the first disc in anyways
* when you inserted the disk it autoran the installer which is a program on the first disc. to exit the installer the executable is needed again or else windows/installer will have a read / write error.
* verify copy protection again?

Because Joe User expects to start installing from disk 1, and expects the copy protection to require disk 1.

Yes it might make sense to (say) start the install with disk 2, but people would stick in disk 1 anyway.

Yes it might make sense to have disk 4 or whatever the last disk is be the play disk, but people would stick in disk 1 anyway.

It's only annoying the one time you're installing the game, after that it makes sense.
