Why do firewalls take forever to load up?

I've tried, sygate, zonealaram and kerio...all take up 2 min to load, I see the desktop, but I have to wait for the firewall to finish loading, if I try to open anything it wont open, nothing happens until the firewall is up.

help?

Before I went hardware, that's what I used, nice simple and light footprint. I tried 4, and even though it had better features, those were at a cost of bloat.

I'm pretty sure that the firewall is not the problem, since my "bloated" Kerio 4.2 doesn't take more than a few seconds on an XP1600.

Does this happen on every login, or just your first?
Have you tried the built-in XP firewall?

Zonealarm 5.5.094.000 is pretty sharp for me - a couple of seconds at start up - of that reall doesn't matter to me if it took 5 seconds given the usb wireless connection takes longer to start up :)

(given the speed of your PC compared to mine I might suggest you find the root cause of it all. Do you have alot of bloat on your PC, are you running XP - because it'd only taking that long because you've got some rubbish on your hardrive. I'd recommend defragmenting and then cleaning it up (conflicts, too many startup programs etc) after that then run tuneXP's special defragment and other things to improve boot time.)

Friends...
CCleaner - can remove startup entires too.

Running virus/anti-spyware scanner etc free include MS anti-spyware, ewido, a-squared, ad-aware, spybot. Also Kasperksy, spyware sweeper, trojan hunter, and tds-3 are notable programs you can get on trial versions.

It's one of those things (bloat, spyware, massive fragmentations) or a combination.

Otherwise, your hardrive is appalling (dying?) and you need a new one

I'm thinking it's a hdd issue too. I reformatted my drive w/ my firewall clean the other day and after the reinstall it doesn't take near as long to boot up. I'm using zonealarm pro 6.

Hmmm well I ran Ad-ware, Spybot, CCcleaner, defragment, ran AVG 7.0 free edition, and AntiVir...all clean and same problem. The only programs I have opening at startup is AVG, AntiVir and the firewall, they load up right away except any firewall I use, and I do mean ANY.

Maybe it's because you're running 2 antivirus'. In any case it's not a good idea to do that. I like Antivir, so I suggest uninstalling AVG :^).

it really depends how many programs are trying to load up and how much resource they are taking up...that would determine the speed the firewall would load
