Sofia Coppola has a beard?! what the farts?

I can only imagine that male directors, like to grow beards, the same reason many men grow beards... they like them.

They're surrounded by beautiful movie stars - but they're usually dumpy middle-aged men. They grow beards to cover up the ugly, so they won't feel so inadequate.

Lazy, and they don't trust their assistants to shave them and not nick the jugular.

What an absurd generalization. But I'll offer an absurd theory in response... maybe they work so hard that they don't have time to shave, and don't care anyway since they are only going to be on the featurette on the dvd, which only hard core fans who don't mind shaggy directors will watch anyway.

From my experience, it's almost every man behind the camera. Bunch of scrounges.:disgust:

It probably helps to emote a sense of authority. It takes a lot of balls to direct a large crew.

Not so absurd.

Kubrick
Francis Ford Coppola
Scorsese used to have one
Michael Moore
George Lucas
Steven Spielberg

Now list the people who don't have one, and I'll see you in about 8 years when you're done with THAT list.

The people I listed are extremely prominent directors, not just random directors.

No, but I was associated with the industry.

I wouldn't exactly call moore a prominent director... maybe it's just me.

also i'm not sure you can really count scorcese... almost anyone would count then. who HASN'T grown a beard at some point in their life?

That said:

Werner Herzog
Akira Kurosawa
Krzysztof Kieslowski
Ingmar bergman had a thing beard at times, if any
Frank Capra
Darren Aronofksy
Yimou Zhang
Pedro Almodovar
Blake Edwards

What do you have against Scorcese?

I think his point was that you can't count Scorcese because he used to have a beard, but doesn't now.

Well, according to the definition of the word prominent, he certainly qualifies, regardless of anyone's opinion of him as a director.
Immediately noticeable; conspicuous
or
Widely known

That's the same definition I was using... I'm not sure that he is widely known... if by widely you mean outside of western europe and the US. At least, certainly not in comparison to the other directors named by the person who wrote that post.

He's obviously widely known. You can be famous without being a household name in Australia or Asia.
