<rant>so i used to use netscape 4. it didn't take multiple pop accounts, but had incredibly easy profile management so you could just add another profile instead. then outlook express came out, and i didn't like that i had to use filters (which for some reason micro$oft has to rename to a "rule" why the h3ll does micro$oft have to rename everything?!?) to seperate accounts. so then mozilla comes out and i use it, and i like that it keeps everything seperate, but the profile management is damned near impossible. which only affects me because i like to format a lot. but really a power failure nuked my inbox my sent folder and i'm pissed. so i install outlook (the real thing) and its the most unresponsive program i've ever used! its completely unresponsive when trying to change a message from read to unread (i set it to change after 1 second, and it doesn't do it!), when loading messages, even when opening frickin' windows for Christ's sake!</rant>

maybe i should just switch to a telnet client like pine. need to find a mail server that allows that.

Outlook has lots of features, but is unresponsive and just does BAD stuff to my Windows environment. I expect more smoothness from Win2k and Outlook seems to screw it all up.

I've been using Eudora Light for over a year now, it's an older version that isn't as flashy as the new one, but it hasn't failed me yet :)

genocide,

I would be careful with versions of Eudora older than 4.2. They had a bug that if the program crashed while it was downloading a message from the server it could corrupt the MBX file so that all your mail is unreadable. I had it happen once and I will never use Eudora ever again.

I have access to my .mail file directly, in case anything happens, I work for the ISP that hosts my connection. So if worse came to worse, and my .mail file was hosed, I could get a favor from a sysadmin and get a backup copy of it :) But not everyone has that luxury, so if this bug is really that dangerous, I can't reccomend it for anyone else. I've had nothing but luck so far ;)

pine is not a telnet client. pine is a email user agent found on most UNIX systems.

furthermore, it's not up to the mail server to decide whether or not "pine" is supported. it is completely independent. what you really mean is that you want an email account from a server that gives shell accounts.

pine rocked. i used it for my ccwf.cc.utexas account, which wasn't as often as mail.utexas, but they've gone and deleted my ccwf account since i've graduated. i must be the only person they did that to, everyone else knows someone thats had their account there forever or whatnot.

ElFenix, another Texas grad heh? Same here :) Anyway, they nuked my accounts at UT about 5 years after I graduated, so you're not alone.

I use Eudora 5.01, and it works just fine. All I do is make a backup of my mail file directory every now and again, and voila, no problems with mail, no problems with mail worms that exploit outlook etc etc. Very satisfied Eudora user since it first came out for win 3.1.....

tagej - mine was gone in 3 weeks. i didn't even have it 5 years.

i used to make backups of my mail directory when i was using netscape 4. the profile scheme was simple (netscape\users\username) so i just copied it out. when necessary copied it back. problem is when i get to mozilla. the user directory scheme is the most assinine thing i've ever seen. it defaults in win 2k to documents and settings\nt username\application data\mozilla\profiles\user name\some weird code lettering system. so i changed the directory which for some reason didn't work and then it creates a completely new profile and ARRRGH its so annoying! i can't figure out which directory to copy things back to! (not to mention that mozilla has copied IE's completely useless history dis-functionality)

now that i've only got the one email account again perhaps i should go back to netscape 4 handling email?

I love netscape 4.x email client. Best one for me. I just try to keep my mail seperated into folders and at reasonable sizes and it works great. The only problem I've ever had is after a crash some mail from my other folders migrating into my inbox. Odd :D

oh yeah, i remember why i switched from netscape 4 now... it would download mail messages, and then it would delete them without me ever seeing a trace of them! i think its because my inbox became huge (i never deleted anything for some reason)

I find that Eudora is my favoite of a bunch of sucky e-mail clients. I have a couple different POP accounts and Eudora merges them all into one mail box. I tried Netscape 6 because I used to use 4, but 6 never seems to work right, or else it just crashes at random. I'm scared of all the Outlook only viruses and trojans (not literally but why would I want to deal with them if I don't have to?) I keep going back to Eudora every time try something new, so I've pretty much stopped trying.
