Why do electronics come out in Japan a year or so before available in the USA?

I have noticed that in Asia playstations, cellphones, slim laptops are available there long before in America. Any ideas?

I'm thinking that in general all technology is developed in Japan and therefore it gets to market first... otherwise it would make no sense to release playstation or cellphones. Or better yet, America still has a market for older technology, so there is no need to introduce new stuff if old stuff is being sold.

It's part of the conspiracy to make Americans jealous. Why do you think there are so many anime freaks who want to turn Japanese?

They are the test market. Alot of products are release in Japan, that the rest of the world never gets. Probably more people want the latest and greatest, even if means buying a new cellphone every 2 months.

Americans are conservative when it comes to technology. The majority of the population takes the wait and see approach.

Because most americans are not willing to pay top dollar for items. If you just take appliances for example in Japan, everything is so much quieter. Hair dryers, dish washers, etc...all made with more insulation and a better fit and finish. The Japanese are willing to pay for this. Americans wouldn't.

If it's successful in Japan, then they will take the risks to export...usually in small test markets first....

Just imagine what it would be like if they didn't have all the toys to keep them...with the obvious exception of the camera phones. ;)

I have seen it as well... they're THEIR products,

that's why their consumer market gets it first. Not everything in this world is centered around USA.

conversely, why is it we make our Hollywood movies, and they don't get to watch them before WE do?

Because we don't make them for them specifically... though it'll make its way to them and other countries in 3 months or so...

yeah, it's the easy adoption of new products...and you consider that they service such a high number of people in such a small land area, the ease of distribution and supply can't be touched. They're just used to having the newest techs, since a lot of it is developed over there still.

<---jealous. wants a Motorola V80 already.

A lot of the telecom technologies being behind in america is due to tv and radio stations owning all the available frequencies. They don't want to sell at any realistic price. In the 1950's (I think), basically they were able to scoop everything up that could ever be used at fire sale pricing due to the FCC's regulations on it.
