Shouldn't a computer monitor, with better resolution than a tv, be a better way to watch DVDs than a TV?

Then why do DVD movies look like crap on my computer? I have a fairly good monitor, but the dvd picture itself is not as clean as on a TV screen.

Im using PowerDVD Pro 6 and a NEC DVD-RW, and I think my BFG 6800 is more than capable for DVD playback.

i have a theory, your monitor is so good, i mean since it can display at high resolution the crappy part of the dvd is exposed but then if you're viewing an original dvd then you should be getting crisp images..i face this problem when i watch shrinked dvds

You hit the nail right on the head. DVDs aren't high def, so on a higher def monitor, such as any modern computer monitor, the picture isn't going to look great.. On a lower def TV the DVDs work out great, however we're going to be getting new standards in disc format to allow for HD movies. HD-DVD and BluRay will allow for the 20+GB of space required by high def movies.

Sit as far away from your monitor as you generally do from your TV set and you should be good.

Look at a DVD on a TV from about 15" away. It won't look great there either.

Because the resolution of a PC screen is TOO GOOD

Traditional TVs would have 640*480 resolution
DVDs are designed for that

not until HD-DVD you would see playing DVD would be great on a computer monitor

It's the same reason why non-hi-def TV looks like sh!t on a monitor.

TV/movies are much lower rez that monitors, so to an extent, the display exposes all the flaws in the video.

ya that's thw word, all the flaws of a dvd normally covered by tv is exposed by your monitor which must be at least 800*600
